“She Makes My Heart Flutter” Series Review (Ep.1 to 5)

In a suffocating, overwhelming, and fast-paced world, we’re all looking for that one place that gives us a chance to breathe.

Dickinson’s Bar offers just that place in the South Korean GL She Makes My Heart Flutter.

Starring Byun Ji Hyun (Seol) and Park So Mi (Jung One), She Makes My Heart Flutter invites viewers into the story of two generations of women in the same family who find comfort inside a lesbian bar.

Jung One is a quiet woman who finds the courage to break away from the job she isn’t fond of to open the bar of her dreams, a bar that she hopes becomes a haven for other women like her, women who love women. A place where they can be themselves and embrace their sexuality.

A place she does not advertise. A place she feels more comfortable keeping a secret.

Until her niece, Seol, also a lesbian, stumbles into the bar with her friends and discovers her aunt is the owner.

Thus ensues a fun, eye-opening tale that explores Seol and Jung One’s sexuality and the differences in how they view themselves.

Part of a generation that prefers being seen rather than hidden, Seol doesn’t hide her sexuality. While she doesn’t openly advertise it, she also doesn’t shy away from expressing herself and embracing what she likes and dislikes.

On the other hand, while unashamed of her sexuality, Jung One keeps her attractions to herself. She grew up in a generation where accepting oneself doesn’t always mean being open.

To help her aunt gain more customers, Seol un-privates the Dickinson’s Bar Instagram account, making the business public.

Using social media to publicly out Jung One’s secret bar symbolically portrays Jung One’s fear of being exposed and opens communication between aunt and niece about respecting individual boundaries.

While all of the romances in She Makes My Heart Flutter truly did make my heart Flutter, especially Jung One’s, what truly drew me into this drama was the respect it has for the community.

She Makes My Heart Flutter offers a safe place for queer women while also being open about the respect we should show toward each other, whether we are from a previous generation or the current one. We all face and accept our sexuality differently, but it doesn’t make us any less brave. It doesn’t make how we feel about who we fall in love with any less grand.

Jung One’s subtle romance with the customer who arrives every night at 8 p.m. was beautifully told, delivering a classic feel to a modern story.

Love is love in a fast-paced, suffocating world, and Dickinson’s Bar offers a respite from the noise. It provides a place of belonging, acceptance, and respect in a world where there isn’t enough of that, especially for those in the community.

For an inviting romance inside a safe place full of love, check out She Makes My Heart Flutter on the Soo Not Sue Studios YouTube Channel. There’s a lot of power in the five episodes offered, and I hope we see much more from this screenwriter and director.

I, for one, wish I was sitting at the bar and sipping a drink while reveling in being me.
