“My School President” First Impressions (Ep.1 to 3)

My School President is the musical BL dramedy I didn’t know I needed.

Let’s be honest, if there’s one thing GMMTV does better than anyone it’s the sugary-sweet, light-hearted, BL comedy. 2gether, Bad Buddy, Fish Upon the Sky, Theory of Love, SOTUS – all of these series have become worldwide hits.

My School President has taken the best of all of these series and rolled them into one adorable package that’s well-written, fabulously acted, and just plain fun.

Nattawat Jirochtikul (Fourth) stars as Gun, the handsome and headstrong leader of his high school music club. Norawit Thiticharoenrak (Gemini) is Tinn, the newly elected school president as well as the son of the principal Photjanee (Tao). It is Photjanee’s mission to disband any club that doesn’t bring honor to the school, and the first on her chopping block is the music club. Enlisting her son to help, she doesn’t know that Tinn has a major crush on Gun. To be honest, no one does, including Gun. Tinn goes out of his way to make Gun think he despises him, but behind the scenes, he goes out of his way to help Gun and the music club.

Like another GMMTV series Vice Versa (Which aired earlier this year), My School President has some incredibly meta moments. In this week’s episode, Tinn’s best friend Thiu (Mark Pakin) tells him to get some romantic pointers from the series Bad Buddy – which Mark was also featured in (and said as much). There is also a cleverly worded one-liner that mimics Sarawat (2gether)’s famous “Keep staring at me and I’ll kiss you until you drop.”

But one of the things that really sets this series apart is the music. Both Nattawat and Norawit have wonderful voices and the songs are incredibly catchy. My one hope for this series is that GMMTV will finally release a CD soundtrack (or at least a lossless USB). The previously released soundtracks are all .mp3 and as an audiophile, it hurts my heart – these songs deserve to be heard in their lossless glory.

New episodes of My School President stream Fridays on the GMMTV official YouTube.

  1. You might need to find any one of several open source audio software to convert an often compressed mp3 to Flac. It takes a few tweaks to get outstanding sound. I worked in a recording studio for 20+ years. Enjoyed the review too!

  2. Action / suspense / horror genres seem to transcend cultures – Police Story, Squid Game, Top Gun, Black Panther, etc, – much better than romance, comedy and musicals do. But Au has figured it out with My School President!

I don’t think I’ve ever (intentionally) laughed, swooned and swayed while watching a BL as much as I did during episode three of MSP. Tinn seems to be a completely together teenager, except when it comes to his feelings about Gun, which just turn him into a hot mess. And Gun seems to be a goofy airhead – but is he really?

My favorite scene was when Tinn, self-described as inept when it comes to flirting, which is pretty much confirmed as the episode progressed, hits a home run and melts Gun’s heart when he asks to stare into his eyes. Well that scene and watching those two dance together; that was pretty good (and visually pleasing), too.

Maybe buying a tux, taking ballroom lessons, and re-watching Bad Buddy for flitting tips would help my game.

  3. the music really is fun and catchy!
Also like Bad Buddy, the script is throwing twists on rom/com/BL tropes such as Mr President’s attempts to share headphone and clean off his love interests messy mouth:)
    Fun fun fun.
My fave scene was the lift of the ballroom dance transformation (take from the best: in this case Gaya Se Pelicula- but they probably borrowed from somewhere as well lol)
