“Midnight Love” Movie Review

This mini-movie appears to be more like an ‘after-school’ project and perhaps held together with chewing gum and glue. This is never going to win any awards nor be on any top 10 list. However, it did do something for me that so many BLs, especially Thai, do not do for me anymore. And that is, it made me smile. It made my eyes tear up. It also made me reflect. Further, it made me see how so, so many everyday ordinary gay relationships begin. This gem captured the heart and soul of a humanity that is not often portrayed. A humanity of individuals whose beauty lies within, not without, whose goodness is inherent, not extrinsic, and whose fortitude is who they are. It is a story of genuineness and strength of character. It is a story of life. And most importantly, it is a simple, basic story of love.

Mr. Film (Kidtisag Makongrach) owns a film company and is looking for a security guard. Cop (Kong Boonruang) applies for the same and, because of his apparent eagerness, gets the job. Cop seems like an anxious type, wanting to please and has a sense of commitment about him. He also catches the eye of Mr. Film’s son, Content (Night Khamnang) and slowly a friendship develops between the two. As the friendship develops, they grow attached to one another and begin to share. Content discovers that Cop wants to be an actor and is trying to go to school to become one.

Suddenly one day, Cop faints and Content takes care of him, but Cop insists that he is fine and can continue to work. Unbeknownst to Cop, Content persuades his father to have him intern there because both have seen his work ethics, standards and passion. Thinking initially, he was going to lose his job, Cop is inconsolable and begs to keep his job. When he finally realizes the opportunity he is being given, he is beyond grateful.

This is such a basic story that at first, I was taken aback by its simplicity and did not see the value of its straightforwardness and thought it uninspiring. However, watching this short film is like eating a good meal, slowly. Perhaps you do not appreciate all of it until you finish it, including the desert, and when you do, you understand how joyous it was. They took the ordinariness of life and made it extraordinary. They took love from an outward expression to an inward expression. And we got to see the world of two rather typical individuals turn joyful, blissful, and amative.

If you are expecting mountains to be moved by the acting here, then you will be disappointed. Sometimes it is the gentleness of a soft breeze on a warm summer’s night that gives you the most comfort and satisfaction. These two young actors are obviously novices and perhaps lack depth, but that does not negate their ardent tenacity to portray these characters as real individuals. Kong as Cop displays a wide range of emotions that are so real and come from a place of understanding the emotions he is trying to display. Whereas Night as Content is a sweet, unsophisticated individual who still sees the good in people. He may be innocent, but he intrinsically feels and sees the beauty in others. His persona is one of pure joy and impeccability and he sees life as a light, not as a shadow. We need more Contents in our lives.

There is such an honest scene at the end of this short abstract of life that is worthy of praise for its simplicity and essence. It took them 30 seconds to do what other BLs take multiple episodes to express. The father gives them an acting exercise and tells Cop to send a feeling to Content to guess. In that brief moment, as they look at each other and hold hands, Content smiles and says to him, “Are you are sending me love?” and Cop responds matter-of-factly, “Yes sir, I am.” And each in their own awkward and fumbling way, kiss each other. Sometimes, less is more and screams the loudest. I cried. I had forgotten how occasionally love can be displayed in its most basic, rawest form and still be profoundly effective, especially when it begins from a starting point of sincerity.

This is just plain fun and gives us the bright side of humanity and shows us the limitless purity of unconditional love.
