Weekly BL Updates

As the curtain of another week falls, the stage is set for a fresh slate of movie and TV show picks in the BL universe. Never have we seen such an influx of new content, but don’t worry we are here with all the details, so read on.

Boys Love – Omegaverse

After 17 years, a sequel to the BL movie ‘Boys Love’ which was released in 2006 will be produced as ‘Boys Love Omegaverse’. The sequel will portray the romantic relationships of four men and the leads will be played by Ren Nakameguro, Ryota Ide, Shunsuke Kinoshita and Daiki Ide. These four gentlemen are members of a mens idol group which is set to debut on June 9th 2023. Omegaverse, also known as A/B/O is a subgenre of supernatural erotic fiction. It is based on the premise that a dominance hierarchy exists in men, which are divided into dominant Alphas, neutral Betas and submissive Omegas. The Omegaverse is a concept that is still new to the BL world, other production houses in China have attempted to incorporate it into their works but all are pending and none have been released yet.

Love Tractor

Next Entertainment World (NEW) plans to release 3 BL series sequentially over the remainder of the year, starting this June. The works that are scheduled to air are ‘Love Tractor’, ‘Follow The Wind’ and ‘Bon Appetite.

The first to premiere is ‘Love Tractor’ starring Dowon and Yoon Dojin. When family obligations force Sun Yool, a stressed out law school student, to the countryside, It seems like a great opportunity to escape the chaos of the city. After all, the great outdoors promises fresh air, sunshine… and a new romance? Soon after arriving, Sun Yool is thrown into a series of strange encounters and misunderstandings with his 20-year-old neighbor, Ye Chan. But in spite of Ye Chans bumbling first impression and Sun Yools prickly exterior, the two find themselves drawn to each other.

His Man

Auditions are underway for the 3rd season of the popular Korean mens dating reality show ‘His Man’. Two seasons have already been released in the space of one year, and this has prompted other countries to follow suit and create their own version of the show. ‘His Man’ follows eight men with diverse occupations who are made to live in one house as they search for love. They are given daily tasks and in the process, they get to know each other a little better. No elimination happens during the show; the point is to see how many of them will find love in the end. Season 3 is expected to air later on this year.

What Did You Eat Yesterday – Season 2

The sequel to the award winning series is set to premiere this October. ‘What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ is based on Fumi Yoshinagas manga of the same name and was originally released in 2019. It was followed by a 3-episode New Year’s Special and a Movie Sequel which aired in 2021. The drama portrays the story of a lawyer who lives with his boyfriend, a hairdresser. Season 2 will follow the couple as they enter their 50’s. As this new phase of their life begins, a lot of things change including their environments, their bodies and their minds. However, one thing remains unchanged, the delicious meals served at their dinner table.

Tie The Not

Oxin Films have postponed the release of their mini-series ‘Tie The Not’ to June 24th 2023, so as to not draw attention away from ‘My Story’ the series which is currently on air. The series is inspired by a true story and Daryll Rodriguez will play the lead role alongside Oryl Mejia. The story follows Briggs; whose family runs a bridal car business. Briggs has never had a chance to fall in love until he meets Shao, a groom to be. How will they navigate this new found love in the face of so many obstacles?

About Us but Not About Us

Jun Lanas award winning movie starring Romnick Sarmenta and Elijah Canlas (Gameboys) will be streaming on Prime Video starting June 22nd 2023. The movie depicts Eric, a professor grieving the loss of his partner. He meets Lance, an ambitious literature student and rumored lover, for a meal. Over the course of their meal the mens pleasant conversation becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse in which startling revelations are made.

My Croissant

Kool Play, a production house in Cambodia, has released a trailer for their upcoming BL series called ‘My Croissant’. The series will star Chris Pitt and Chhunly Mock as Best and Coconut respectively, they will portray two co-workers at a café. At first glance they seem to be at odds with each other but deep down Best is harboring deep feelings of love for Nut. With the help of their friends, hopefully, they will find a way to each other.

Egoist

Nikkatsu has sold the Daishi Matsunaga’s LGBTQ+ romance drama ‘Egoist’ to the US and a trio of territories in Asia. The film has been picked up by Stand Releasing for the US, which is planning a release this autumn, alongside South Korea (Studio Elon), Taiwan (Sky Dig) and Hong Kong (Golden Harvest). The movie stars Ryohei Suzuki as a fashion magazine editor who starts working with a young personal trainer, played by Hio Miyazawa, who has dropped out of school to support his ailing mother. Having lost his own mother early, the editor is fascinated by thee young man and eventually they fall in love, but with a festering secret.

My Universe

Tia51 and AmarinTV34 have collaborated to create ‘My Universe the Series’, a BL project with 12 stories, 11 couples and 24 episodes, making it one of the biggest BL productions ever undertaken. The project features many popular names and faces including Earth and Bank from ‘Destiny Seeker the Series’ and Kaowanah and Turbo from ‘Love Stage the Series’. As of today approximately half of the stories have wrapped up filming, and AmarinTV34 announced that the project will premiere on Sunday August 20TH 2023 on their channel, with an UNCUT version which will be available on IQIYI. The first story to air is ‘Casanova Begins’, the story of Khun Khao, a lost soul who wakes up in the body of Kim Casanova. The only rule: nobody should find out his real identity or else he will die within 3 hours.

Friend. Boyfriend

Luythai will release a miniseries starring up and coming actors Game Krit, Run Sarun and Aum Pongsakorn. The series depicts Aum and Nack who are best friends and co-workers at a bar. Their personalities are very different, one is quiet and caring, the other is a laid back playboy. Mew is a newly recruited staff member at the bar, he is good looking, talkative and it doesn’t take long for him to grab the attention of Nack. This creates tensions at the workplace as Aum realizes he has more than platonic feelings for Nack, forcing Nack to choose between the two.
