“Sing My Crush” Series Review (Ep.1 to 8)

The wind travels over a world full of people trying to find their way, lifting the hair and kissing the cheeks of the people it passes by. Swirling, twisting, ducking into a million seen and unseen places.

Dreams. Love. Courage.

That’s where the wind takes us in the Korean BL Sing My Crush. Adapted from Geumdong’s webtoon of the same name, it follows aspiring musician Han Ba Ram (Jang Do Yoon) as he traverses the heartache of being rejected and betrayed while achieving dreams and falling in love all over again with an acquaintance, Im Ha Tae (Son Hyun Woo).

It’s a short, sweet watch that embodies an inspirational message about acceptance, determination, and being oneself.

There’s something out there that everyone finds courage and comfort in, whether it’s art, music, a person, an object, or simply being alone. No matter how hectic and chaotic life is, in those moments, we find ourselves. That’s what I like the most about Sing My Crush. It never loses that moment of courage.

In the face of betrayal–having the words Ba Ram bled on paper taken away from him and his sexuality used against him– Sing My Crush maintains what makes Ba Ram internally strong: music and love.

It isn’t just about falling in and out of love, the past and the present, or even having someone next to you who believes in you unequivocally. While those things give us courage and help us stay focused, the real potency of Sing My Crush is that Ba Ram can take the words “I like you” and become comfortable with them. He can accept himself, his dreams, and falling in love all over again amidst the fear of being forced to face himself.

Taking back the plagiarized song “Letter of Apology” wasn’t just about the song. It was about taking back himself and his right to those feelings. And in the process, toward new feelings with Han Tae. It takes a few wrong turns and a few times getting lost in life to find the right place and people we feel most comfortable with. The wind doesn’t blow in only one direction.

Sing My Crush is a cute, meaningful watch that asks viewers to look within, to recognize that the flow of the world around us isn’t straight and narrow. Even the title of the song, “Letter of Apology,” hits hard.

No one should ever have to apologize for falling in love with anyone.
