“Love Class 2” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

Three different stories. Three different university experiences. Three different romances.

Such is the narrative the sequel to the Korean BL Love Class offers.

Starring J-Min (Lee Hyun), Kim Yong Seok (Kim An), Lee Kwang Hee (Ma Roo), Woo Hyo Won (Min Woo), and Jung Jae Woo (Sung Min), Love Class 2 starts off like a mystery drama, leaving viewers wondering about character Kim An and his involvement in an opening scene suicide.

From there, it dissolves rather effortlessly into setting up three different tales. Love lost and found with Lee Hyun and the enigmatic Kim An, unrequited love with Ma Roo and Min Woo, and an unexpected meet-up with teacher’s assistant Sung Min and student Joo Hyuk.

While I found each of the burgeoning stories interesting in their own right, it’s a lot to keep up with in short twenty-minute increments. With only eight episodes remaining, Love Class 2 has a lot of stories to tell.

Can they do it?

The initial episodes had little time to do much more than introduce the myriad of characters involved in the series while also touching on Kim An’s suspicious past, but it does promise to keep viewers busy. Three love stories mean less time to get bogged down in a single narrative. So, while I worry about the length when there is so much story to flesh out, I look forward to experiencing multiple romances in a single series.

Love Class 2 has a lot of places to take its viewers. Whether they manage to pull it off will depend heavily on how well they work to tie up each one. In an ensemble montage of stories, there is no doubt everyone will find a story they relate to more than others. This leaves Love Class 2 in the precarious position of making sure it satisfies the viewers who favor each couple.

I found the first two episodes easy to follow, even as disjointed as it was at times, but the chemistry falls short in places. This has less to do with the actors and more with how each story transitions into the next. There’s little time for the magnetic stares and small touches and moments that build up tension.

But there’s still more to come.

Lee Hyun and Kim An have me the most intrigued, mainly due to the mystery involved, but I’m more than willing to see where each story takes me.
