“Century of Love” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

Love isn’t a simple thing. It’s never predictable and always changing.

And yet while there is no way to truly pin love down, the Thai BL Century of Love strives to make its viewers believe in the power of holding onto it.

Starring Daou Pittaya (San) and Offroad Kantapon (Vee), Century of Love tells the story of a devoted man named San who spends a hundred years waiting for the woman he loves to reincarnate after she died to protect him.

A hundred years later, she does come back. As a man named Vee.

Thus begins an engaging story about a man who holds onto an unforgettable love only to discover that love is much more than the visage we’re born with.

The first two episodes set the stage for an intriguing love story fraught with obstacles. From a disapproving father to a scorned fiance to a stone that has the power to prolong life, Century of Love is one wild ride with actors who are obviously passionate about the story they’re telling.

And that’s precisely what’s keeping me invested: the actors.

In all honesty, there are a lot of reasons why this series works and many reasons why it doesn’t. While the actors are working hard to bring the story to life, the script itself sometimes fails them. The fight scenes don’t always feel realistic, the cinematography and CGI aren’t as strong as I expected them to be based on the trailer, and the dialogue feels cringey at times. Scene transitions are blunt and key emotional moments tend to get swallowed up by the need to reveal too much while also trying to hide plot points to remain mysterious.

It also struggles to decide whether to be a comedy or a melodrama. While I love a good angsty plot that balances emotional scenes with humor, Century of Love seems confused about the direction it wants to take. Is it a comedy or a melodrama? It did, however, get stronger with each episode. By the end of episode two, it felt like it had begun to find its footing, even if the slope was slippery.

That said, I still find myself wholly invested in San and Vee’s story because one thing is clear: Offroad and Daou make an incredible pair on screen. Their chemistry is undeniable, and both are great actors who play well off of each other. From the moment each of them steps on screen, it’s obvious that what really matters is them and the love their characters desperately need. It’s impossible not to fall in love with them.

And that’s what makes Century of Love shine—the love story.

The protagonist supporting actors are also endearing while the antagonists are as distasteful as one would expect them to be, allowing the viewer to get lost in the story despite any flaws.

All in all, Century of Love is a love story that is worth getting lost in. The counterbalance between desperately holding onto a love you can’t let go of and learning to let go of something that is meant to change over time is beautifully done with San and Vee’s characters and their struggle. And I find myself enthralled by the direction they’re pulling me in.

Love is blinding, but it also opens eyes.
