Cute is the perfect word to describe the new Thai-Korean BL drama Eccentric Romance.
Starring Thai actor Save Saisawat as Jay and Korean actor Yoon Jun Won as Seong Hun, the series follows two close friends—Jay, a Thai student, and Seong Hun—who enroll in a Health and Happiness college course together. When the course requires them to meet fitness goals, Jay, who struggles in the gym, turns to personal trainer Jin Uk (Go Byung Wan) for help. However, suspicions arise when Jin Uk appears linked to a local murder case.
The first two episodes of Eccentric Romance start strong, using the opening murder scene to set a mysterious tone before transitioning into the lighthearted friendship between Jay and Seong Hun.

The alternating language switch can be jarring and takes some suspension of disbelief, despite the series trying to work it into the script by making the supporting characters be Thai language students and Thai travel enthusiasts who apparently understand Thai but don’t really speak it. However, the chemistry and the building relationship between the leads overshadows any language barrier. The playful banter between Seong Hun and Jay, coupled with Seong Hun’s jealousy over Jay’s growing bond with Jin Uk, builds a sense of intimacy that carries the show.
The standout performances in this series elevate the script, helping smooth out any choppy transitions and language differences. Save Saisawat and Yoon Jun Won skillfully bring their characters to life, creating a believable friendship and growing romantic dynamic. Though his role is smaller, Go Byung Wan’s portrayal of Jin Uk effectively injects intrigue into the storyline, adding depth to a drama that might otherwise lean solely on humor and banter.

All in all, Eccentric Romance manages to grip its audience with a character-driven storyline that the cast delivers with skill and charm. I’m eager to see where they take it next.
