“Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

In the darkness, there’s always a light, and when that light is love, it shines even brighter amidst the shadows. Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo, a new Korean BL drama, captures this beautifully, blending love and pain in a way that intensifies both. The story follows high schooler Lee Do Hoe (Kim Nu Rim) and his strained relationship with his strict father, the local Taekwondo master. Everything shifts when Sin Ju Yeong (Lee Seon), a cheerful student from Seoul, arrives, bringing hope and warmth into Do Hoe’s bleak world. But soon, the light Ju Yeong offers is threatened by the darkness that Do Hoe has known all his life.

Every so often, I stumble upon a drama that’s so powerful I hesitate to spoil the emotional journey it offers. Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo is one of those rare finds. It’s a story woven with desperation, yet threaded with hope and a growing love that touches the heart, even as a sense of dread lingers. This is a raw and moving portrait of insecurity wrapped in the need for security, capturing all the awkwardness, worry, and joy of falling in love while trying to escape the violence and sadness that define Do Hoe’s life.

From the acting to the direction and cinematography, Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo starts off strong, hooking viewers with the promise of a story filled with pain, joy, and a love that will both break and uplift. In the first two episodes, there’s nothing that feels lacking: the plot is compelling, the love story is touching, and the subtle exchanges between Ha Hyeon Ho (Jang Yeon Woo) and Do Hoe hint at an unrealized love—one that painfully reveals how repressed feelings can turn toxic when fear and pain feel easier to face than accepting one’s true desires.

For a series that doesn’t shy away from hard emotions while drawing viewers into an unforgettable journey, catch Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo, now streaming on iQiyi and Gagaoolala.

I have feeling it’s going to leave us all in awe.
