“My Damn Business” Series Review (Ep.1 to 7)

This short but unsullied movie, broken into 7 episodes, is surprisingly effective and very entertaining. While a few cringe worthy scenarios brought it down a few notches, there is one big framework that catapults it back up into the stratosphere, making it exceptionally rare for a KBL. This is an obviously low-budget production that has essentially two main characters and only a smattering of other characters. Thus, it is character driven.

Sales Team 2 has just received word of its dissolution because of a management crisis. Han U Jin (Jung Jae Bin) is the team leader and must wrap things up with all the partners in a few months. With no one left to assist him, Yun Su An (Jeon Ju Bin) is assigned to help him with closing details. Unbeknownst to Yun, Han harbored a previous fascination with him. For reasons unknown, he has awakened within Han memories of meeting him many years ago while Yun was working at a coffee shop. He became enamored with him then. Han is now surprised and delighted to see him standing before him as his new assistant. Han is rather inept at trying to win Yun’s attention over and comes dangerously close to harassment on several occasions. That indeed could have been handled better. The term ‘awkward’ comes to mind immediately.

By accident, Yun does something that gets Han into trouble. While it was clearly Yun’s fault, Han takes the blame. It is then that Yun realizes the strength and depth of Han’s feelings for him. The story blossoms into a very entertaining love connection with no serious complications or unnecessary roadblocks and more importantly no unnecessary tropey situations – save one.

There is a silly jealousy circumstance that is completely unnecessary to this story and is rather cringey. Han needs to meet up with a partner to sign papers who happens to be an old friend of Yun. Park Yeong Chan (Park Min Jae) is a former confidant of Yun. And as such, they are close. It added nothing to the story and made Han’s responses appear rather childish and over-the-top immature and doltish. That whole scene was plainly unnecessary and detracted from the story.

However, all is forgiven at the end. With a rather reflective but bittersweet moment on their last day in the office, as they are ready to leave, they reflect on what might have been in the office but never was but wished it had. At that moment as the lights when out suddenly, Yun grabs Han and passionately kisses him, who then in turn passionately kisses him back in what is one of the best amorous encounters in a Korean BL I have seen in a long time. Long, sensuous, erotic, and very, very passionate. Oh, how nice it is to see a kiss between two men that looked natural, fervent, meaningful, real, and spontaneous. A rarity in almost any BL presently and almost entirely nonexistent in Korean BLs. Well done! So romantic!

The two main leads – Jung Jae Bin as Han U Jin and Jeon Ju Bin as Yun Su An – have a naturalness about what they did and who they portrayed. Neither overly dramatic nor ever underplayed. It was as if we were watching real life. We did not know a lot about either one of these characters, but we sure learned a lot about who they were by watching these actors perform. Both quiet, reserved, withdrawn individuals who nonetheless want to be loved but do not know how to go about developing a solid relationship. Both have genuine chemistry together and their timing with one another is outstanding. And as has been mentioned, their kissing is top-notch and some of the best I have seen in any BL in a very long time. Although it is a short series, the two of them accomplished what they set out to do. To present two individuals with an appreciation of who they were and what made them tick. In other words, to give these two characters, life. It was just fun to watch Han and Jun develop a relationship. Awkward at times, but still feeling quite natural overall.

This series will not move mountains. But it will entertain you. Plus, the kissing (oh that kiss!) at the end is undoubtedly one of the best in a Korean BL you will see. It just feels so right. It is a fun series to watch!
