“A Perfect Match” Series Review (Ep. 1 to 10)

Occasionally, when you are watching something, you just get a sense that you are going to be affected by it. And in this rather short series (just about 2 hours long total), you get a feeling you are going to smile and be delighted when it concludes. And that is exactly what this beautiful mini-BL series does to you. It is so entertaining and so well crafted, you might feel that if you had not watched this, you would have sensed something was missing from your life. It is that good. The whole story unfolds so beautifully with the perfect cast that you begin to feel immersed in the presentation itself.

Tian Xiang (Yu Shu Ting) is readying himself for a job interview. He now wants to become more productive with his life and start to take care of his Grandma (Ma Hui Chen) who has raised him from childhood after the death of his parents. On his way to his interview, however, he helped rescue a young girl who is almost run over by a motorcycle. He accompanies her to the police station, and because of his kindness and empathy, she becomes attached to Tian Xiang. When he is finally able to leave, he rushes to the company but is too late for the interview. Lin Xio Nan (Liu Cheng) does not want to hear his reasonings behind his tardiness for his interview and cavalierly dismisses him.

Later, perhaps in a twist of fate, Xio Nan discovers that the person who rescued and comforted his distraught sister, Lin Xio Ruo (Tu Nien), is the person that he so curtly dismissed. Xio Nan also realizes that Tian Xiang brought life back into his sister who now seems much happier and more hopeful than she has been in years. Xio Ruo is an emotionally unstable young girl and has been unable to relate to anyone except for Tian Xian since the death of their parents. Xio Nan would like Tian Xian to not only come back to his company for an interview but also to take care of his sister. Reluctant at first to do so, he remembers that Xio Nan somehow seems to be connected to a reoccurring dream of his that he has about meeting a handsome man at the beach.

Although Tian Xian does have a boyfriend, Wei Xiong (Tu Wei Li), he catches him philandering with his boss’s daughter. Devastated, Tian Xian ends their relationship immediately. QianQian (Rainie Teng), Tian Xiang’s best friend, tries to comfort him but also warns him not to now get overly involved emotionally with another ‘straight’ man again. The consequences for another emotional crisis with Xio Nan are looming as she tries to remind him.

Reluctantly, this time he does listen and honestly tells Xio Nan that he cannot continue to work with him and his sister because he is starting to like him, and he knows how awkward that will all become. Because he is not in her life anymore, Lin Xio Ruo runs away again, and both go looking for her. When she is found, Xio Nan confesses that he cannot live without Tian Xian as well, and he too has fallen in love with him.

Two people shine here. Ma Hui Chen as Grandma goes through a metamorphosis. Old but not old-fashioned. It pained her initially to realize her grandson was gay, but when she sees the contentment and happiness that is on his face when he is with Xio Nan, that is all that matters to her. She does make it a point to sit down with the two of them and delve into their relationship. She does ask Xio Nam if he is willing to make Tian Xian happy and more importantly to take care of him. It reflects a great deal of thought and understanding on her part to take this rather courageous stance. That whole scene is done with such grace, dignity, and care. I wish a lot more BLs would take the time to enhance a solid conclusion to a relationship that is seen by others in a genuinely realistically compassionate and understanding fashion. While we see her struggling, we also see her conclude that this is not her life but her grandson’s that must be lived. And she wants to be able to support his happiness – their happiness. The other shout-out needs to go to Tu Nien as Xio Ruo. While a small role, she really provides the bridge between the two protagonists. We sense from her behaviors that she is not quite ‘normal’ and is obviously in need of considerable nurturing. She ‘lights up’ when she sees Tian Xiang. She recognizes qualities within him that bring out the best in him, which then brings out the best in her own brother. She seems to sense their compatibility and the need for the two of them to be together. With few words, she is really the one who cements their relationship together. Both these characters are simply a joy to watch.

This short and sweet BL is not going to win any awards except perhaps only my acolytes and my respect. It is a cute, solid story with such stellar acting. While so many BLs take so long to say so little, this says so much straight away. It gets to the point. While not Greek gods, they have Adonis bodies and frankly I would like to see them in more BLs. They have wonderful screen chemistry together and make a believable couple. Even if Wei Xiong tried to set up a ‘red herring’ in their relationship, it simply would not work. Despite the shortness of this series, they had enough connection between the two of them to prove that their relationship was more than just a flash in the pan, as the expression goes. You will see what I mean by that at the end.

I loved this series. It feels good. It looks good. Its message is loud and clear. I wish a lot more BLs were to the point and as genteel as this one.
