“Goddess Bless You From Death” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

Adding another to the list of horror BLs.

The name of this show sounds scary enough. ‘Goddess Bless You From Death’. It shows there will be black magic, death, blood and hopefully, gore. And it’s releasing on 31st October. Perfect!

Just as much as the genre is exciting for many, so is the pairing. PoohPavel have already made waves in the industry with just 1 series under their belt. And with a series vastly different from their previous one the anticipation is high. One can only hope this presents itself as a success and shows this pairing can do various genres because they ARE really compatible.

Personally I have been super excited about this series since the pilot was released almost a year ago. This genre is right up my alley and with a cast which is one of my favourites I have high expectations for this series.

The Story

At the scene of a horrifying mass murder Inspector Singha (Pavel Naret) finds the only possible suspect – Thup (Pooh Krittin). However, Thup claims he can see ghosts and those ghosts are responsible for the murders. Also when he’s with Singha somehow he can’t see ghosts? And asks to stay with him. When the evidence clears Thup, Singha decides to take him home and soon realises the young man has knowledge about black magic and dark rituals. To keep him from wrongfully being presented as a suspect, Singha keeps him beside himself all the time and declares to his team that Thup is a temporary consultant for this investigation. But cutie Thup & no-nonsense Singha are getting close faster than expected. Will they develop a deeper connection? We’ll have to wait and see.

Acting

If you have watched PitBabe you would already have knowledge about the acting skills of the cast. Which also means a very high expectation from the cast. And so far the expectations have been reached. No notes. Pooh got lots of negative comments previously for his acting and this time he really wanted to prove he has developed as an actor. And it actually does show. Not that I found him bad in PitBabe but he has definitely gotten better. For others they have shown range with this show. This is my first time seeing Otto so I don’t know what to expect. But in the few scenes he has he has done good so far.

Direction and Everything Else

First things first- Michaels’ red hair looks BOMB AF!! Never knew red suits him so well. I’ll be honest – I had to repeat and watch the parts of him because I just kept staring at him.

The makeup and costume department also did their job perfectly. You need real dedication and hardwork to make human beings look like that. The ghosts in this show look scary and will probably give you nightmares.

Direction and cinematography is also amazing. Although it’s too early to say if they will do the scary scenes’ justice.

The feel of dread (does it live up to its name of horror BL?)

One of the things I look out for in horror shows is the feeling of dread. Not just a jumpscare, creepy music or a scary story told by a creepy passers-by character we never meet again. A feeling that runs chills down your spine even when nothing is happening on the screen. A feeling that this is highly likely possible to happen to you. The feeling of drear also ups if you are familiar with the setting shown on the screen. And as an Asian the presence of red-everything, a banyan tree, black magic rituals are all too familiar to me. And this show gives you all that.

It is still too early for any real hauntings to be shown but the ghosts and mutilated bodies shown in the two episodes are already fuel for nightmares. The feeling of dread still hasn’t established yet, but I’ll give it time. And the trailer does show glimpses of some promising scenes.

Overall I have enjoyed the pilot episodes and I am looking forward to more.
