Upcoming Asian BL Dramas- Part V

We are here with our latest feature on the upcoming shows that are set to premiere in October 2022.

Our current watchlist is already overflowing with quality dramas; but obviously that won’t stop avid BL fans from checking out these new shows. The Boy’s Love genre is fast evolving; as such, instead of offering the usual sensual flair, content creators are gradually becoming more self aware. Sex sells, but if the storytelling is lacking, the drama will fall apart. With a lot riding on their shoulders, the upcoming releases will face tough competition from the on-air shows as well as their predecessors. So better grab your coffee mug to refresh yourself, because this article is going to be a long read!

To Sir, With Love

This is one of those dramas that we are definitely anticipating, but the problem lies in its availability. The next BL Lakorn from One31 Thailand camp, To Sir, With Love is already making waves because of its republican era styling. Starring popular actors Film Thanapat, Tongtong Kitsakorn and Jam Rachata Hampanont in the lead roles, the show is based on the concept of forbidden love between gay men in the foregone era. The recently released trailer seems promising and has all the makings of an intriguing Lakorn; but will the show be available to inter fans? Although One31 Thailand’s last BL drama, Rak Diao was released on their YouTube Channel subsequently; interfans had to wait patiently wait until the English Subtitles were added (which took almost five months). For a media giant (that is on par with GMMTV), One 31 Thailand isn’t huge on catering to the international audiences. So, don’t hold your breathe; because even if the drama starts streaming online, there is no guarantee that the production house will provide subtitles. Unless One 31 Thailand decides to have a tie up with streaming portals like Netflix (The Miracles of the Teddy Bear) or Gagaoolala; the show might not have an international premiere (starts on 3rd, October, 2022).

Synopsis-

Being gay is a taboo in a Chinese descent family. Tian is an heir who must hide his secret to keep the inheritance! However, the truth is gradually revealed.

Exclusive Update-

Kabe Sa Doujin Sakka no Neko Yashiki-kun wa Shouninyokkyuu wo Kojiraseteiru/Kabe Koji

Recently, I have been enamored with Japanese BL’s (currently watching More Than Words and it’s mind blowing). So, obviously I’m expecting great things from Kabe Koji as well. Adapted from the manga “Kabe Sa Doujin Sakka no Neko Yashiki-kun wa Shouninyokkyuu wo Kojiraseteiru” (壁サー同人作家の猫屋敷くんは承認欲求をこじらせている) by Minamoto Kazuki (ミナモトカズキ), the drama stars Matsuoka Koudai and Nakao Masaki in the lead roles of Nekoyashiki Mamoru & Kazama Issei. The storyline might remind you of the popular manga adaptation “Love Stage” (comparisons are inevitable). I’m hoping that’s where the similarities end and we actually get to watch a mature romance with great storytelling and a flawless execution. The trailer looks interesting; both Koudai and Masaki seem to have an effortlessly natural chemistry. Although we don’t have any updates about international availability, still it’s Rakuten (so, it might be available on Viki with English subtitles). The miniseries will premiere on 4th October, 2022.

Synopsis-

For Mamoru Nekoyashiki, a doujinshi artist, the only thing that satisfies his need for approval is to sell his original BL manga at the popular Kabesa section (a section for popular doujinshi circles on the wall side of the venue) and be recognized by readers at the event. But then one day, something happens to him! He meets Kazama Issei, a childhood friend he once had a crush on who is now a popular up-and-coming idol. Their lives in distant worlds should never have crossed paths, but you can’t take your eyes off this story of two young men growing up in each other’s presence! (Source: Crunchyroll)

Ghost Host, Ghost House

Another supernatural romance (I’m hoping this one is better than Something in my Room), Ghost Host, Ghost House will start streaming on Vibie Gen’s YouTube Channel from 5th October 2022. Starring Tod Techit and Boy Natthaphon in the lead roles of Kevin and Pluem; the show has cast Guide Chavanvit Vongpong, Brook Ruenarom, Incz Lalda Nananukul, and Natty Nathamon Chantraviphat in supporting roles. The storyline seems to be quite similar to Something in my Room, so expect an angsty, bumpy ride. But, Tod & Boy have a refreshing chemistry and it’s worth a try (free bonus, we get a house full of friendly ghosts and also sassy grim reapers). Here’s hoping this show doesn’t disappoint (I cried bitter tears watching SIMR’s lackluster ending).

Synopsis-

Kawin is a live streamer whose passion, due to past trauma, is the challenge of hunting ghosts. He didn’t know that he’d come to stay under the same roof as those hunted ghosts when he comes to live with relatives in Thailand. He also meets Pluem, a young man who seems to understand his feelings of loss. Together, the two have to confront a truth too difficult to bear.

Big Dragon

Adapted from “Dragon Eat Big” by Aiden N Vivienne, Big Dragon will premiere on 8th October 2022 (International platform unannounced). Starring rookie actors Mos Panuwat and ISBANKY in the lead roles of Mangkorn & Yai, the show hits the nail on the “Enemies to Lovers” trope. The trailer gives an angsty feel with the oodles of chemistry between the main leads. I’m totally anticipating this show & dreading the premise as well. The storyline has a lot of potential, but it could turn into a huge mess and go awry if the execution is poor. Star Hunter Entertainment’s adaptations aren’t impeccable and it’s easy to nitpick the flaws. I’m hoping Big Dragon doesn’t suffer from the same directorial mishaps or acting tirades. Fingers crossed!

Characters

☆ ISBANKY & Mos Panuwat will be playing the main leads, Yai & Mangkorn

☆ Fong Bovorn & JJ Rathasat will be portraying the roles of Phak & Phong

☆ Non Thanawat Khonsantiwichai & Big Thanakorn will be playing the roles of Rat & Nine

Synopsis-

“Mangkorn, who goes under the name of “Dragon” is the hottest architect out there. Yai who is nicknamed “Big” is the young man of the executive committee and heir to a line of famous businessmen. When their two worlds collide and established territories are invaded, how tumultuous will their story be when great foes are ready to do anything to win?”

Remember Me

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone?

Technically, we are living in an age where handwritten notes don’t exist. We rely on emails for business purposes and chatting apps for fast communication. Remember Me takes you back to a time period where people still communicated via letters; which was obviously a more direct approach to express your feelings. The premise is actually refreshing and brings back fond memories (the last time I wrote a letter was about twenty years ago). Directed by New Siwaj, Mean Phiravich (who supposedly doesn’t want to take up BL roles anymore, but has no qualms directing them) and Nipitpon Muangsinun, the miniseries will be streaming from 9th October 2022 on Gagaoolala. Don’t Say No couple First Chalongrat and Ja Phachara will be playing the lead roles alongside Title Teshin, Man Supakrit, Mean Phiravich and Title Tanatorn. The trailer looks interesting and I’m definitely hooked.

My Tooth Your Love

Result Entertainment’s next venture, My Tooth Your Love will premiere on Gagaoolala starting 14th October 2022. Depicting the intriguing romance between a difficult patient and his handsome dentist, the show stars Andy Wu and Snoopy Yu in the lead roles of Bai Lang & Jin Xun An. Alongside, we have a parallel love story happening between bartender Zhou Cheng Hao (Alex Chou) & rebellious teen He Qing Tian (Michael Chang). The trailer looks promising, the main leads have an amazing chemistry and the production House has been actively promoting the show on their social handle. Will this drama chart the same popularity enjoyed by it’s predecessor We Best Series? Only time will tell!

Synopsis-

Jin Xun An, a promising achiever, is already the chief dentist at his dental clinic at a young age. Although cold-hearted and distant by appearance, Jin Xun An has nevertheless earned himself the coveted title of being the “Master Prince of Dentistry”. One day, he is entrusted by Bai Qing, one of his seniors, to treat her precious little brother, Bai Lang. As Bai Lang seats himself in front of Jin Xun An, he looks at the man with the cold and ruthless look. And while a mask covers most of Jin Xuan An’s face, it only helps highlight his deep, electric eyes. Bai Lang then hears his gentle and soothing voice telling him not to be afraid. But almost instantaneously, he finds himself stunned, his heart palpitating and finding a desperate excuse to run away. As it turns out that Bai Lang is not the first dental patient to try to run away from Jin Xun An, but definitely the most troublesome since Jin Xuan An started his career.

Hard Love Mission

What happens when your mission starts affecting your heart?

With a tagline like this and a trailer that hints at a somber romance, you can totally imagine the storyline. Starring Jukkapong Paohom & Tonliew Methaphat in the lead roles of Putter & Yoshi, this show is another “Superstar falls for a commoner” romance. The cinematography looks catchy and despite the awful subtitles in the trailer (I’m appalled because the show will premiere on WeTV and I totally expect better standards). I’m saving my judgement until I get done watching the pilot episode on 15th October!

Synopsis-

Yoshi and Ampere are entrusted to interview big star Putter. The two take a trip to Ko Samet for the interview. Unexpectedly, Yoshi is thrust into the position of temporary personal manager to Putter. What’s more, he has to take care that Vivi doesn’t get to close to Putter and stir up news. There will be many hard missions Yoshi will have to undertake for this interview.

Eternal Yesterday/ Eien no Kino

An “Opposites Attract” romance with a supernatural twist, that’s “Eternal Yesterday” for you. Adapted from the novel “Eien no Kino” (永遠の昨日) by Eda Yuuri (榎田尤利), the show will be succeeding MBS’s on-air drama Takara-kun to Amagi-kun on FriGay band. Starring Komiya Rio & Inoue Sora in the lead roles of Yamada Koichi & Oumi Mitsuru, the miniseries will premiere on 20th October 2022 (most certainly on Gagaoolala).

Synopsis-

Koichi, who is cheerful and popular in the class, and Mitsuru, who is talented and not good at socializing. The two high school students are strongly attracted to each other due to their opposite personalities. However, one morning, Koichi is hit by a truck in front of Mitsuru. Koichi got up on the spot and smiled as usual, and although he was indeed “alive”, his classmates gradually began to forget about Koichi’s existence.

Till the World Ends

The show’s title might remind you of the recently concluded Pinoy BL drama Love at the End of the World. But that’s where the similarities end; director Aam Anusorn is quite confident that his Sci-Fi romance bears no resemblance to the aforementioned drama. Acting as Art Pakpoom’s (What The Duck) comeback vehicle (who is returning to the BL world after a pretty long hiatus), Till the World Ends promises a natural chemistry between the main leads. Art has been paired opposite Best Anavil (Golf); alongside Michael Kiettisak (Gus) and Knight Pichayuth (Long). The show will to premiere on 29th October 2022; international platform is still unannounced.

Synopsis-

Strong berry is pretty popular for its wide repository of short films; they make meaningful cinema which is widely celebrated and recognized.
