Boys Love series have become quite popular worldwide, especially in Thailand. And while the storylines differ, the topics are usually the same. However, a few BL series don’t follow the norm. This is the case of the well-known series Manner of Death, for example, which has received a lot of praise for its excellent plot full of suspense. This is also the case of Self, an unusual story whose mystery revolves around a mirror, and in the process introduces a new concept in BL.

First of all, I want to compliment the intro music. I tend to base my initial impressions on the music background, and I have to say that it fits the theme! I liked how they started with the guitar; it made me feel connected with the instrument itself. I firmly believe that music speaks to our souls, so I was totally engrossed! Also, the opening scene reminded me of the sentimental vibe of Until We Meet Again. As for the setting, it is really nothing new. If you are a fan of BL, you will be aware that school settings are the typical rule. However, after watching the first two episodes, I focused more on the plot than the environment. I’ve said it before and will say it again: I like the plot not just because it’s fictional, but also because I get to participate in it and develop additional theories about it, just like I did with Manner of Death. This is, in my opinion, one of the best methods to keep people interested and eagerly anticipating the release of the next episode.

So, let’s talk about the plot itself. Tang (Zen), a supporting character on another BL called Triage, plays music. He is an introvert and only interacts with band members. When the band performs online, only a boy is visible in the mirror reflection. As for Tang, he was completely gone and only his guitar could be seen floating. The scene gave me shivers multiple times. If I were Tang, I would absolutely freak out and might even pass out! I mean, imagine seeing someone else in the mirror as you stare at it! You’ll soon discover that the person Tang sees in the mirror is Neo. We find out that Neo has dealt with discrimination. As someone who has watched a lot of shows, I am convinced that Neo has another story to tell, thus I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming episodes. Why did he end like that? Is there something that happened prior to the accident? I suppose there is a need to investigate on what truly happened, and why Neo winds up on the scene. I do have a lot of questions, and I realize it is too soon to draw any firm conclusions regarding all that has been spoken so far. It also strikes me as strange that Tang will eventually develop a close relationship with the man in the mirror. He was so uneasy at first.

This show has amazed me as it stepped back from the conventional or traditional BL. As a fan of mystery and suspense shows, I like it when I can feel I am assisting the characters in solving the mysteries, and the series delivers that feeling.

To sum up, I can say that this series will put our reasoning abilities to the test. To be honest, I have theories about why Neo is showing up in the mirror, but I can’t share them just yet because I need confirmation. I’ll let you guys know as soon as I find out if they are correct.
