Directors are visionaries.

Behind every great film and series, an equally passionate director guides it forward. It requires hard work, determination, and dedication to orchestrate all the moving parts it takes to put a story on camera.

This artistry is why having the chance to interview Thai director Lit Samajarn is such an honor for us. Having helmed such projects as SOTUS, Love Mechanics, and My Engineer, among a few, Director Lit Samajarn joins the BLXpress to share his experiences, advice, and thoughts on directing and screenwriting as well as some insight into what he plans to offer viewers in the future.

1) What is it that inspired you to pursue filmmaking? Have you always had an interest in directing?

อะไรเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้คุณสร้างภาพยนตร์ คุณมีความสนใจในการเป็นผู้กำกับตลอดมาเลยหรือเปล่า

Since I was young, I have loved art. I enjoy reading comic books, painting, and watching movies. When I grew up, I decided to major in film with the goal of becoming a director. A story that interests me is what I wish to tell. In 2014, I made my feature film debut as a director with “Until Now,” finally fulfilling my dream.

ผมเป็นคนชอบศิลปะตั้งแต่เด็กๆ ชอบวาดรูป ชอบอ่านการ์ตูน ชอบดูหนัง เมื่อโตขึ้นก็เลือกเรียนทางด้านภาพยนตร์ แล้วมีความฝันที่อยากจะเป็นผู้กำกับ อยากเล่าเรื่องที่ตัวเองสนใจ แล้วในที่สุดก็ได้ทำตามความฝัน กำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกในปี 2014 เรื่อง Until Now กาลครั้งหนึ่งจนวันนี้

2) As a director, what do you look for in the actors you work with?

ในฐานะผู้กำกับ คุณมองหาอะไรในตัวนักแสดงที่คุณร่วมงานด้วย

1. Look for characteristics that fit the character we want, such as personality, habits, and physical appearance.

2. Consider the performer’s charm, distinctive selling proposition, and point of interest in order to attract viewers.

3. Attitude, or how one feels about doing teamwork. Looking for a coworker who is cooperative, accepting, and has an open mind.

3) I’ve worked with and am friends with directors, many of whom have a specific vision when working on a film or prefer working on specific genres, such as romance. Is there anything in particular you hope comes across on camera in your work, and what kind of stories do you prefer directing?

ฉันเคยทำงานและเป็นเพื่อนกับผู้กำกับ ซึ่งหลายคนมีวิสัยทัศน์เฉพาะเมื่อทำงานในภาพยนตร์หรือชอบการทำงานในประเภทที่เฉพาะเจาะจง เช่น โรแมนติก มีอะไรจ

I frequently pay attention to things that can motivate others. Content that improves society by encouraging people to fight against various issues or making them love one another more. Or, at the very least, make them smile as they watch my work.

ผมมักจะโฟกัสในเรื่องที่สามารถสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้ผู้อื่นได้ เนื้อหาที่ทำให้สังคมน่าอยู่ขึ้น ผู้คนรักกันมากขึ้น หรือมีกำลังใจในการต่อสู้กับปัญหาต่างๆ หรืออย่างน้อยดูหนังของผมแล้วก็ขอให้ยิ้มได้

4) Is there a specific type of project you would like to work on one day?

มีโปรเจกต์ประเภทไหนที่คุณต้องการลองทำดูสักครั้งหรือเปล่า

At the moment, I use Thai actors to tell the story. It creates a message that will only be delivered to specific audiences. What I’d like to do is use performers who are well-known around the world to deliver stories in English or another language that is more widely spoken than Thai in order to reach a wider audience.

ณ ปัจจุบันผมจะถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวเป็นภาษาไทย ใช้นักแสดงไทย ก็ทำให้สารที่จะสื่อมีคนดูแค่บางส่วนเท่านั้น สิ่งที่อยากทำคือการเล่าเรื่องด้วยภาษาอังกฤษ หรือภาษาที่มีคนใช้มากกว่าภาษาไทย เนื้อหาที่เป็นสากลมากขึ้น และนักแสดงที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลก เพื่อสื่อสารกับคนทั่วโลกได้มากขึ้น

5) I see that you also write. As an author, I’m always interested in other writers and their creative processes. Please give us some insight into your writing process and what inspires you.

I’m constantly on the lookout for societal issues, and I attempt to use the influence of the movies I have to intervene and contribute to a positive change, like the most recent project I’m working on. The rising suicide rate made me aware of a depressive issue. I’d like to share a story that illustrates the term “Life is Beautiful” and the worth of life.

ผมมักจะมองหาปัญหาในสังคม แล้วพยายามใช้พลังของภาพยนตร์ที่ผมมี เข้าไปช่วยอะไรสักอย่าง เพื่อให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทิศทางที่ดีขึ้น อย่างงานล่าสุดที่กำลังเขียนอยู่ ผมมองเห็นปัญหาเรื่องโรคซึมเศร้า เรื่องการฆ่าตัวตายที่เพิ่มมากขึ้น จึงอยากนำเสนอเรื่องราวที่ทำให้เห็นคุณค่าของชีวิต ว่า Life is Beautiful.

6) Out of all the projects you’ve worked on, is there any particular project or scene that stands out for you as a director?

จากโปรเจ็กต์ทั้งหมดที่คุณเคยทำ มีโปรเจ็กต์หรือฉากใดที่โดดเด่นสำหรับคุณในฐานะผู้กำกับหรือไม่

I typically use well-known series to respond to this topic. But this time, I’d want to address Meow Ears Up, my favorite story, which stands out in an unfavorable perspective. There are elements of fantasy, challenge, and utmost commitment. But it ultimately proved to be a failure. No acquaintances, few people are watching. This motivated me to identify the errors that occurred so I could fix them the next time.

หลายครั้งผมตอบคำถามนี้ด้วยซีรีส์ที่ได้รับความนิยม แต่ครั้งนี้ผมขอตอบเรื่องความโดดเด่นในมุมที่มันไม่ประสบความสำเร็จ คือเรื่อง Meow Ears Up ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่ผมชอบมาก มีความแฟนตาซี ท้าทาย และตั้งใจทำที่สุด แต่กลายเป็นว่าไม่ประสบความสำเร็จเลย ไม่มีคนรู้จัก ไม่มีคนดูเท่าไรนัก ทำให้ผมอยากศึกษาในจุดบกพร่องที่เกิดขึ้น ว่ามาจากอะไร เพื่อจะได้นำมาปรับปรุงแก้ไขในครั้งต่อไป

7) The most recent project of yours I watched is Love Mechanics, of which I am a fan. It’s intense, emotional, and well-thought-out. What are your thoughts on this project as a director, and how was it working with Yin and War?

โปรเจ็กต์ล่าสุดของคุณที่ฉันดูคือ Love Mechanics ซึ่งฉันเป็นแฟนซีรีส์เรื่องนี้ เนื้อหามันเข้มข้น ลึกซึ้งถึงอารมณ์ และมีความคิดที่ดี คุณคิดอย่างไรกับโปรเจ็กต์นี้ในฐานะผู้กำกับ และการทำงานร่วมกับ Yin และ War เป็นอย่างไร

There was a lot of pressure on me because this project has already been produced and it is already really good. In terms of wanting to stand out since I don’t want it to resemble the old one, I must also perform well. However, it was inevitable that they would be compared to the previous one in the end.

Yin and War are superb actors who are willing to collaborate and are receptive to the director’s point of view. They perform wonderfully. They conveyed humor well in a moment where humor is required. They never let me down when I needed sadness in a scenario. They are considered actors who can play any role. They also possess a wide range of abilities.

เรื่องนี้เป็นโปรเจคที่เคยทำไว้แล้ว และดีมากๆ อยู่แล้ว จึงทำให้ผมกดดันมาก ทั้งในแง่ต้องการความต่าง เพราะไม่อยากทำให้เหมือนของเก่า เมื่อจะทำให้ต่าง ก็ต้องทำให้ดีด้วย แต่สุดท้ายก็หนีไม่พ้นการถูกนำมาเปรียบเทียบกันอยู่ดี

8) As the screenwriter and director of Sotus, do you find it easier or more challenging to direct a series that you also wrote?

Participating in the script’s writing is preferable because it helps me understand the background of the story I want to tell and how it came to be told. I learn more about the character’s complexity. If a problem arises while filming and changes are made, the story’s main conflict will be preserved, and the problem will be more effectively resolved.

9) Do you have any advice for those interested in filmmaking or writing?

คุณมีคำแนะนำสำหรับผู้ที่สนใจเกี่ยวกับการสร้างภาพยนตร์หรือการเขียนหรือไม่

The answer to this question is extensive. Because I had to go through many things and attempts before I reached this point. The quick answer is that if you don’t have money or solid connections, you’ll need passion, a love of storytelling, perseverance, determination, and the bravery to pursue your goals.

10) As an international viewer, I’ve noticed a change in the industry in the last few years, mainly through the dramas I’m watching. What do you find to be the most significant change from where the industry is now from when you started?

ในฐานะผู้ชมจากต่างประเทศ ฉันสังเกตเห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงในวงการซีรีส์/ภาพยนตร์ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมา โดยส่วนใหญ่มาจากซีรีส์ที่ฉันกำลังดูอยู่ คุณคิดว่าอะไรคือการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่สำคัญที่สุดในวงการนี้จากวันแรกที่คุณเริ่มเข้าวงการมา

If you look at it from the perspective of the economy, the production volume of the series is considerably bigger due to competition diversity with the introduction of more streaming firms. The development was also influenced by the cash flow. Thai tv series are still inferior to those produced internationally, however they are generally improving. If ongoing effort is put into developing a new idea or viewpoint it demonstrates that Thailand is more accepting of gender and that LGBTQ+ people play a bigger role in society. There are more different genders in the stories or characters that actually occur.

ถ้ามองในแง่ของเศรษฐกิจ ด้วยการเข้ามาของบริษัท Streaming ที่เยอะขึ้น ทำให้ปริมาณการผลิตซีรีส์นั้นเยอะขึ้นมากๆ ทำให้เกิดการแข่งขัน เกิดความหลากหลาย เมื่อมีเม็ดเงินเข้ามา ก็ทำให้เกิดการพัฒนาไปด้วย แม้ว่าซีรีส์ไทยจะยังไม่ทัดเทียมกับซีรีส์ในระดับสากล แต่ก็มีแนวโน้มที่จะดีขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ถ้ายังมีการลงทุนอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ในแง่ของแนวคิดหรือมุมมอง ก็ทำให้เห็นว่าประเทศไทยนั้นเปิดกว้างเรื่องเพศมากขึ้น LGBTQ+ มีบทบาทในสังคมมากขึ้น ตัวละครหรือเรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้น จึงมีเพศสภาพที่หลากหลายมากขึ้น

11) Can you tell us about any upcoming projects you may be working on? If not, where do you see yourself in the next few years in the industry?

คุณช่วยบอกเราเกี่ยวกับโปรเจกต์ที่คุณอาจจะกำลังทำอยู่ได้ไหม ถ้าบอกไม่ได้ คุณมองตัวเองในอีกไม่กี่ปีข้างหน้าในวงการนี้อย่างไร

A project for a BL series is currently being written. On November 22, there will be a press conference.

Additionally, a feature film is in the process of writing. I genuinely want to tell this story because I think it has social significance, and I hope that people will find inspiration in it.
