“Girlfriend Project Day 1” Series Review (Ep.1 to 4)

Starring actresses Bing Hye Jin and Park Hyun Woo, the South Korean GL Girlfriend Project Day 1 is a short four-episode series that exceeded my expectations

Although topping off at a full twenty-five minutes combined, Girlfriend Project makes up for its length in its delivery.

As a bisexual viewer constantly on the search for a myriad of mainstream projects delving into sexuality, I admit I’ve been a little disappointed in the lack of lesbian programs. With the rise of apps like Gagaoolala, the offerings have expanded, but there is still a disconnect with GL projects versus the vast amount of BL releases.

Therefore, I went into the low-budget Girlfriend Project expecting little.

I found a cute, well-acted, fun script full of realistic firsts and awkward ‘getting to know you moments that left my heart fluttering. From Song Hee Ram’s naive knowledge but evident confidence in her sexuality to Ahn Ga In’s more experienced but standoffish personality, there is a building electric chemistry that captivates.

The script is, by no means, deep. Centered on a Psychology of Love and Sex class that pairs its students up in a mock relationship project, it has a “let’s go on a blind date because we met on an app” feel. But what makes this work is that most of us who are part of the community depend on social apps (at least where I live) and spontaneous “oh, wait, you’re gay, too?” moments not only to seek out potential partners and dates but to interact with each other. The awkwardness of the first meeting and the following meshing of feelings is worth every second of the twenty-five minutes.

The series ends at what should be a beginning, but this also somehow works. I look forward to what the second season brings us.
