Favorite Taiwanese BL Dramas (2022)- Part III

As compared to their Asian counterparts, Taiwanese BLs are known for their mature approach and earnest execution. There is no overt fan service involved and as such, the focus shifts to producing exceptional stories that are inspiring and meaningful. In today’s feature, our authors will be talking about the shows that truly made a difference!

About Youth

Focusing on the rustic dynamics between main leads Xu Qi Zhang (Shen Jyun) and Ye Guang (Li Zhen Hao), About Youth portrays teenage innocence, naivete and the grief of unrequited love. Despite its short format, the drama was able to conceptualize the ardent struggles faced by the youth in today’s society; especially teenagers belonging to the LGBTQ community. They have to keep their sexuality under wraps while trying to meet parental expectations. Being forced into a box with no way out is frankly depressing. The show was successful in relaying the strong message that young minds need to be free of societal obligations and peer pressures. Also, Hsu Shuo Ting’s nuanced portrayal of Ray and his amazing chemistry with Andy Huang (Ah Jian) was much appreciated and their subtle romance was truly enviable.

My Tooth Your Love

Undoubtedly, one of my favorite BLs in 2022, My Tooth Your Love, deals with traumatic experiences against the beautiful backdrop of a sombre romance between a dentist and a bistro. Most individuals have different ways of dealing with their trauma, some being able to cope on their own whilst others need help. Starring actors Andy Wu (Bai Lang) and Snoopy Yu (Jin Xun An), the show focuses on Bai Lang’s childhood phobia and Xun An’s heartfelt attempts to help his loved one. The story is a beautiful reconnaissance of healing and it also stipulates the strong message of parental acceptance. Despite their apparent age difference, the supporting couple Alex (Alex Chou) and RJ (Michael Chang) were equally endearing and their subtle camaraderie was indeed enjoyable.

Plus & Minus

Plus & Minus was clearly another fan favorite, focusing on childhood friends Zheng Ze Shou (Max Lin) and Fu Li Gong (Shi Cheng Xuan). The fine line between friendship and love is quite discernible, especially when you have been best friends for ages. Fu Li Gong has spent more than a decade repressing his feelings (to safeguard their friendship), so things get complicated when Zheng Ze Shou starts questioning their relationship. The show hinges on the premise that friendship can inevitably lead to love, especially when you have mutual respect and understanding. The show was particularly popular because of the natural chemistry between the main leads, Max Lin & Shi Cheng Xuan (who are supposedly a real life couple).

Papa & Daddy S2

Directed by Nancy Chen (Big Three Dragons and History4), Papa & Daddy S2 had a more serious tone than its heartwarming prequel. While Papa & Daddy was more set in its romanticism, the sequel is more focused on the familial pressures faced by same-sex couples. Jerry’s (Chiu Mu Han) parents represent a closeted generation who are still coming to terms with their son’s sexuality; as long as it happens on their own terms. Their overtly conservative opinion destroys the delicate balance in Jerry & Damian’s (Melvin Sia) relationship as they struggle to juggle their professional life while raising their kids, Kai and Jimmy. Papa & Daddy S2 is a solemn tale of acceptance. Most importantly, it is an important lesson in tolerance and self-awareness. Sometimes beautiful stories can also be resolute, this show is one of those!

We will be back with an exciting new feature next weekend. Till then, keep watching this space as we bring you updates from the BL world!
