“My Colleague at BL Shop Might be the Meant-to-be” Series Review (Ep.1 to 3)

The beauty of short films or mini-series is that sometimes it provides beautiful messages and other times horrific realities in a brief span of time.

“My Colleague in a BL Shop Might be Meant-to-be” is a 3-episodic mini-series, available on YouTube. Each episode is 6 to 8 minutes long. The series mainly focuses on two people working together in a BL bookstore and their journey in getting closer. Shing is a new part-timer who starts working at that shop where he meets his colleague Yiu. Shing has a very outgoing and bubbly personality and he easily gets acquainted with people around him. Yiu is more of a silent, introverted kind of person who prefers working silently. When Shing starts working with Yiu, Yiu starts admiring Shing, blushing and getting stiff whenever he is close to him. It’s all very cute to watch.

During one of their conversations, Shing mentions to Yiu that the reason he drifted towards literature is due to a fan-fiction he read some time ago. Though the writer didn’t complete the fiction, it is still his favorite. Shings shares this with Yiu, unaware of the fact the Yiu is the writer of that fan- fiction. When Shing finds out that Yiu is the writer, he tries to persuade him to complete the fiction, but Yiu tells him that he doesn’t feel confident continuing it. He mostly wants to sleep and work only. He also says that there comes a time when no matter how passionate you are about something, the passion will fade. Shing tries his best to make Yiu confident again and encourages him to complete the fan-fiction and write more.

The show basically revolves around a BL bookstore and the set is not too big. It is filmed in a real BL shop setting owned by the channel of this show itself. The story is not too memorable but is not bad. It’s actually quite cute if you focus on Yiu’s crush. The actor playing Yiu does quite well in his role. It’s not a very memorable performance, but his body language actually reflects the mannerism of a person when they are around their crush.

The actor who plays Shing also does well in acting an extroverted, shy character. The actors did a good job, though a little more chemistry between them would have made the whole thing more interesting. I really liked how when Shing joins the shop as a part-timer, the first thing the owner tells him is to focus on using proper pronouns for their customers and to address them as “Little Angel” instead. It’s a minor detail to focus, but it shows how well they accept and respect people’s sexuality and gender. Overall, the show is cute and can be watched without taking too much stress and is devoid of any complicated drama. It’s a straightforward, cute mini-series that makes you feel happy.

Also, I really liked this conversation-

Shing- “How can we make someone brave again?”

Shing’s Boss- You need an opportunity, or a juncture, to let him go back in the waters”

Rating- 3 out of 5

  1. So glad you covered this! This little show was brought to my attention on another review site- They decided not to give it a grade, but to recognize it as an effort by BL fans who run the location as a non-judgemental BL bookstore. The actors apparently work there every other Sunday.
So is the “story” almost non-existent? Perhaps.
Is the acting/editing/OST top-drawer? not exactly.
But as a BL love letter by fans without a lot of training- this is impressive and sweet.
