“What Did You Eat Yesterday” Series Review (Ep.1 to 12)

What Did You Eat Yesterday also called Kinou Nani Tabeta? is a Japanese BL comedy series about a live-in gay couple and their daily life activities. The main leads are a mature couple who are in their 40s, enjoy eating and cooking together a lot. Shiro (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and Kenji (Seiyou Uchino) are emotionally stable, normal gay couple. Both leads are strong and adorable in their own way.

Shiro is a lawyer, who is not yet out of the closet. Though he cherishes his relationship very much, he isn’t out to his colleague and wants to take his time trying to understand how to cope with people; I don’t think it’s wrong of him to take time. Kenji is a hairdresser and is out & proud. Kenji is very open about his choices and doesn’t care much about what people think. He embraces the fact that he is gay very proudly. The relationship between them is so cozy and comforting that it will provide you the satisfaction of seeing two people in love, enjoying normal intimacies, even though physical intimacy is quite subtle in the show. Personally, I don’t mind because I think it’s important to focus on other things in a BL drama other than only the physical aspect of the relationship. Each episode features a new meal and recipe, prepared at home, after which both Kenji and Shiro enjoy the meal and communicate, making the viewer enjoy a homely and domesticated feeling.

There is one scene in the show where Shiro stands up against the gender norm and top or bottom position during sex; about how people think it specifies the role of an individual in a relationship. I also loved how Kenji was so respectful and it was cute to see him standing there, listening and trying to understand Shiro’s point of view. Both actors did a phenomenal job in portraying their characters, it’s doesn’t feel like we are watching a drama. It felt like we were watching a live broadcast of two people in love, who were so comfortable with each other, enjoying and communicating about their daily life. It felt so natural, the chemistry, the communication, all felt so real. Nishijima Hidetoshi, as Shiro, does a great job and makes us all fall in love with Shiro. Uchino Seiyo embodies Kenji’s bubbly and happy personality flawlessly. He brings so much joy to Kenji’s character that it made me appreciate both the character and the actor.

I would recommend this show to everyone out there who wants to watch a drama where they can understand the complexity of a gay couple with comic and a natural feel. To understand that a couple is a couple no matter the gender and they have feelings, they have issues but at the end what matters is communication, respect, trust and love (obviously).
