“Step by Step” Series Review (Ep.1 to 12)

Step by Step, a captivating Boys’ Love series from Thailand, has taken the BL fandom by storm since its premiere on April 18. In a genre known for its recurring themes, Step by Step manages to stand out with its unique plot, engaging characters, and a refreshing approach to storytelling. This article explores the key elements that make this series a must-watch for BL enthusiasts.

A Unique Plot and Engaging Characters:

Step by Step centers on a fascinating boss-employee dynamic. Jeng, a fearless digital marketing manager, and Pat, an ordinary employee, are introduced to us in the series. These two talented artists, Man Trisanu Soranun and Ben Bunyapol Likhitamnuayporn, respectively, bring their characters to life and give riveting performances. In addition to the main characters, Up Poompat excels as Put, Pat’s ex-boyfriend, giving the story more dimension.

Fresh Faces and Visual Prowess:

Step by Step introduces fresh faces to the BL scene, further enhancing its appeal. Man and Ben, the main leads, bring a sense of novelty to the series, while Saint Paramee as Jaab and Vin Theerameth as Jane give the cast some visual appeal. Poppy’s involvement also heightens anticipation for fans who have been expecting to see him in another Boys Love series.

Chemistry and Character Development:

The chemistry between the main leads, Jeng and Pat, is undeniable. Jeng’s character draws comparisons to Sarawat from 2gether the series, while Pat’s conservative nature resembles Tine’s. As the series progresses, their relationship unfolds naturally, with each episode delving into their feelings and character growth. Viewers are treated to a relationship that evolves step by step, capturing their hearts along the way.

Exploring Love and Overcoming Challenges:

Step by Step adopts a novel strategy by emphasizing the complexity of all relationships, regardless of gender, in addition to coming-out stories. Through showcasing each character’s journey, struggles, and personal development, the series successfully teaches viewers valuable lessons about love and life. The gripping stories go into the depths of true love and the bravery required to express one’s emotions. Step by Step is not without its heart-wrenching moments, as it tackles various conflicts and challenges faced by the characters. Episode 10 stands out as a personal favorite, leaving viewers eager for more. Nevertheless, the show continues to be able to impart important lessons about love and life.

A Step-by-Step Journey:

True to its title, Step by Step deftly depicts the steady development of a relationship, the settling of disputes, and the character development of its protagonists. The series’ realism and credibility are greatly enhanced using time, which enables viewers to fully immerse themselves in the world of the characters. In Step by Step, time has a significant impact on the individuals and their circumstances. The series deftly examines the idea that patience and the capacity to overcome obstacles are necessary for both love and personal development.

An Open Ending and Room for Improvement:

While Step by Step’s last episode comes to a satisfying conclusion, there is still space for growth in one area. Lack of information regarding Jaab and Jane’s relationship makes it seem like an unrealized chance to wrap things up. However, the overall story successfully illustrates the development of relationships and the handling of conflict.

A Recommendation Worth Taking:

Step by Step is a series worth your attention if you’re looking for a change of pace in the Boys’ Love genre. This Thai BL series provides a fascinating and engrossing viewing experience with its original storyline, compelling characters, powerful chemistry, and thought-provoking narratives. You’ll look forward to each new installment of Step by Step with anticipation as you celebrate the characters’ journeys toward love and self-discovery. Don’t pass up the opportunity to watch this amazing series that serves as a reminder that love knows no boundaries.

  1. I am bogged down in ep 10. I found this series by the producers of Lovely Writer- a soggy mishmosh of good and bad.
The good: Man’s performance is grounded and layered. He makes the series worth going through.
The first several episodes have cartoony coworkers but also show actual workplace dynamics. Neither lead is perfect. Both leads identify as gay, if only to themselves- a huge improvement from the silliness of Tine in the TV series.
Bruce, from Lovely Writer, plays an unabashed and self proclaimed “toosie”- a flashy gay who has a love of his own. His performance is refreshing and different from his character in Lovely Writer- please give him more roles.

    Disappointments:
The new actor who plays Pat- has 2 expressions, one of whom numerous people have called out as “constipation face”. He also cries 10 times more than necessary. I have to hold the director as mostly responsible for this. The actor playing Jaab also has some horrible moments, including an awful “crying” scene. If an actor can’t do something= don’t zoom in on it- cut or change the writing!

The writing and editing- choppy and repetitive- a murky mess from ep 3 to 10. I frequently said “Wait- didn’t you already deal with this two episodes ago? Does everyone have amnesia?”

Up, who co produced- gave a terrific performance in Lovely Writer- he probably should have played the younger lead in this- instead he is wasted and underused in another poorly written secondary character.

    I would go 2.5/5.
