“Laws of Attraction” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

There’s power in having a voice and being heard, but when a voice is silenced or ignored, it strips a person of the ability to advocate for the people they love, especially those unable to speak for themselves.

That’s precisely the kind of story the Thai drama Laws of Attraction, starring Jam Rachata (Tinn) and Film Thanapat (Charn), tells.

It follows Charn, a deceptive, manipulative, and witty lawyer with seemingly low morals, and Tinn, a martial arts teacher who loses the niece he raised, Tonkhao (Maki Machida Sutthikulphanich), in a terrible, unjust tragedy.

The first two episodes set the stage: Murder. Mayhem. Injustice. Seduction.

While the series is occasionally campy with choppy editing that affects the cinematography, it makes up for it with story, acting, and chemistry. The characters are easy to relate to, and the emotional connection that links Tinn’s family makes it equally easy to share their grief.

But the real power behind Laws of Attraction’s character-driven story is actors Jam Rachata and Film Thanapat. Both impress. I wasn’t expecting to be this intrigued by the wily lawyer Charn (Film Thanapat) and his deceptive charm, the traumatic past that molded him, and the glimpses of humanity inside the jaded lawyer he’s become. His layered and mad, too-knowing grins set a mysterious stage that is as enthralling (maybe more so) as Tinn’s family’s case.

The same goes for Tinn. Jam Rachata effortlessly portrays the sorrow and helplessness of a caretaker being manipulated by the system that should protect him and his family. His reaction to everything weaves a subtle but overwhelming vulnerability that makes it easy to root for.

It’s hard to believe in a justice that’s abused you, something more than evident in the disenchanted man Charn has become and in Tinn’s unease and distrust.

There’s heart behind the story that Laws of Attraction tells. Jam Rachata and Film Thanapat are great together on screen. Their wickedness, vulnerability, attraction, and secrets entice as much as Charn’s past. Most of all, the sarcastic, witty, and seductive walls Charn masks his trauma with have me in a chokehold, along with the glimpses of ‘naughty’ he manages to pull from Tinn.

I don’t know where Laws of Attraction will take us–if it will offer a profoundly nuanced story about guilt and corruption or take a dark comedy route that touches on it.

Either way, I am bracing myself for the final six episodes. In theory, the law of attraction is a principle that suggests people will attract into their lives whatever they prioritize.

It will be interesting to see just what Charn and Tinn will attract into their lives and each other.
