Spinning the Red Thread with Lazysheep!

When it comes to the wonderful world of BL dramas Until We Meet Again is one of the staples of the genre. Based on the novel The Red Thread by Lazysheep, it’s an epic romance that transcends time, intergenerational prejudice, and even death itself to prove that true love really does conquer all.

It also launched one of the most powerful ships in the industry, OhmFluke.

In the late 80s, Korn (Noppakao Dechaphatthanakun) and InTouch (Katsamonnat Namwirote) have an unlikely but powerful love that defies the laws of their respective families. Unable to make their fathers see the light, and allow them to be together, they both commit suicide.

Thirty years later Parm (Fluke Natouch) is a freshman at the same university as Dean (Ohm Thitiwat). As the reincarnated In and Korn destiny keeps pushing the two together. Stuck between the trauma of the past and the desire to create a better tomorrow, over the course of the series’ seventeen episodes, the couple endure a rollercoaster of emotions that completely shreds the delicate cloth of Parm’s reality.

It’s an incredible journey and one of the best series I have ever seen. Now that the original novel is getting an English adaptation in the form of a manga, it was the perfect time for me to sit down with author Lazysheep to discuss everything about The Red Thread.

When did you first get the idea to write “The Red Thread”?

The inspiration for this story came from my own experience. I want to show the problem of Asian parents who try to control their children without listening to their needs. I also want to explain the LGBTQ+ situation in Thailand too.

If you had to pick a favorite scene from both the novel what would it be & Why?

For Until We Meet Again, I like the scene where Pharm tastes Dean’s sister’s homemade food and realizes it. This scene touched my heart a lot. For Between Us (the sequel series), I like the scene when Hia Win kisses Team’s forehead as a tutoring fee. Cute!!

Did you expect the series to become as popular as it did internationally?

I never thought that this story was well-known in other countries because the story was a little bit dark compared with other stories at the time. Domestic violence and suicide scenes are present in the series, which many viewers did not want to see. So I was really happy when many foreign fans enjoyed this story.

How involved were you in the development of the manga?

For the Manga version, I also check the draft of the comic for every page before publishing.

Do you have a favorite scene or image from the manga?

I love every scene from the manga version. Sensei did a very great job.

Do you have a favorite character that you created? Why?

I love the character Team the most because he is an ordinary boy who really cares for his friends and works to achieve his dreams.

When it comes to “Between Us” was there a particular scene you wanted to write from the other perspective?

I want to write the scenario when Hia Win & Team stay together from the perspectives of their other friends because it will be able to explain more about their relationship.

When it comes to “Between Us” was there a particular scene you wanted to write from the other perspective?

I need to be in a good mood and relaxed when I write a manuscript. I won’t write anything if I’m under pressure at work since it will damage my story. While writing the manuscript, I don’t listen to music, but when I want to set the tone, like in an emotional section, I’ll select a song that fits.

Do you have a clear idea or do you just start to write?

Before I start writing the manuscript, I will have the overall plot, character sheet, treatment, and each chapter’s details.

Will we ever get to read (or see) more from Dean, Parm, Win, Tim and Manow?

(Laughs) Maybe! If I have time, I will write a special short story for a special occasion.

Both Until We Meet Again and Between Us are currently available on the iQiYi app, while the parent series is also available on Viki. If you haven’t seen them, I highly recommend them. The First volume of the Manga version of The Red Thread will be released through Yen Press on 19 September 2023 and can be pre-ordered here.
