On the 23rd of November 2023, Studio Wabi-Sabi held a press conference to announce their 2024 lineup. The event opened up with a special performance from Boun Noppanut who serenaded the audience as his fellow Wabi-Sabi actors walked the white runway. The crowd was also treated to special performances from Earth Katsamonnat covering Taylor Swift, Santa Pongsapak embodying Jeff Satur and the ever-lovely Samantha Coates wrapped up the intro with her rendition of Jessies J’s Masterpiece. The event was simple, yet promising. Studio Wabi Sabi has truly discovered what it means to deliver quality and not quantity. Six projects were presented, four of them with a Boys Love/Girls Element. Everything you need to know is outlined below:
Sunshine In the Wind
Recently Thailand has seen a rise in GL series. Many credit the increase in popularity of the GL genre to ‘Gap the Series’, but whatever the reason we are glad that all the major production companies are following suit and joining the trend. ‘Sunshine In the Wind’ portrays a beautiful flower shop owner called Phra-Phye, who has an ability to sense people’s emotions. Whether they are happy, or sad, scared, or angry, she can always tell how a person is really feeling even if they try to hide it. One day in the market she sees an actress who on the surface looks happy next to her boyfriend, but Phra-Phye can sense that she is hiding sadness and loneliness deep down. Phra-Phye tries to cheer her up, and thus begins their story. While this series is predominantly a GL series, one of the supporting couples is a gay couple.
Four Ever You
This production is an adaptation of Howlsairy’s novel of the same name. The series will star Bas Suradet, Earth Katsamonnat, Tonliew Methapat and Oat Tharathon as North, Easter, Typhoon and Dao-Tok. They will portray four college friends whose lives are turned upside down when they meet four handsome medical students. The drama will be broken down into four separate stories as they are in the novel:
1. Tag! You’re Mine
2. How Much Is Your Love?
3. Beside The Sky
4. The Sun from Another Star
Each story will center on one couple.
Star Scope
It wouldn’t be a Studio Wabi Sabi lineup if it didn’t have at least one tear jerker would it? the production company has built a reputation for releasing one series every year that will have the viewers in tears. From the incomparable ‘Until We Meet Again’ to this years ‘Absolute Zero’, Studio Wabi Sabi knows just how hard to tug at the heart strings. Next Year the fans will be treated to ‘Star Scope’. The story starts in high school with two boys, Khate and Sorn who clearly care a lot about each other. Khate made a promise to Sorn to never let go of his hand no matter what, so it is with great surprise to Sorn when he visits Khate one day and Khate is nowhere to be found. He disappeared, without a word. Though heartbroken, life goes on for Sorn, that is until years later in college when Khate walks back into his life. Khate tries to rebuild the love they once had, but there are reasons as to why he left before, reasons that may take him out of Sorns life again. This time for good.
The Vampire Project
After almost two years since the initial announcement, The Vampire Project will finally see the light of day. The project was previously called ‘My Brocolli’ but was subsequently renamed for obvious reasons. The drama is an original work and it stars Boun Noppanut and Prem Warut. From the initial trailer we can see that the plot follows Punn, a shopkeeper who finds himself embroiled with a nest of vampires. These are not your usual vampires as they all have unique powers; aside from the superspeed, immortality and enhanced senses, one has the ability to shapeshift, the other the has the ability to bring objects back to life, and of course Boun has the power of hypnosis. Boss Chaikamon from ‘Me Mind Y’s ‘Love in the Air’ made a surprise appearance in the trailer; he will also be playing one of the vampires. As of now that’s all the information we have regarding this project, keep an eye on our page for further updates.
First Degree
It seems Boun Noppanut and Santa Pongsapak left quite an impression after their roles as brothers in ‘Between Us the Series’ because Studio Wabi Sabi has decided to cast them as brothers again in a new project titled ‘First Degree’. The project is a thriller/horror series that follows a high school student who enrolls at the same school his brother taught at before committing suicide. There is a belief amongst the students at the school that the place is cursed. The curse is that every four years, eight random students must die in different ways. He doesn’t believe this though; he believes it’s a regular person committing these murders and he wants to prove it.
Aside from these series, Studio Wabi Sabi also launched their new Youtube Channel called ‘Mingle’ which will have four reality shows starring their top actors and actresses. As of now there is no information on when the production company will begin working on this lineup but stay tuned to the BL Express, we will have all the updates as soon as they are made available.
