“Shadow Part 1” First Impressions (Ep.1 to 7)

Prachaya Ruangroj (Singto) stars as Dan, a young man who transfers to Saint Lawrence’s, to start a new life. Instead, the first thing that happens to him at the all-boys school is that he’s hazed by Nai (Natouch Siripongthon, Fluke) who thinks he’s using the new student to for free notes. Instead, Dan spends the entire lecture doodling. Despite the joke, and a short-lived annoyance the two become fast friends, which works out because Dan’s roommate Josh (Poon Mitpakdee), is Nai’s best friend.

But not everything is all laughter and sunshine for the three musketeers, who become four when Cha-aim (Shinaradee Anupongpichart, Yaimai), a girl from a sister school enters the mix for a drama project. Dan Is plagued by a nightmarish shadow, that haunts his dreams while Nai is gifted (or cursed, depending on how you see it) with the ability to see spirits. This includes the shadow everyone else around Dan believes is simply a symptom of sleep paralysis. There’s also the school bully, Anan (played by Thai rapper LazyLoxy), who makes Nai’s life a living hell because he’s gay, and Trin (Patchata Janngeon, Fiat) the spirit of a young man who died under mysterious circumstances the year before.

Dan came to the School because of his closeness to the school’s Dean Brother Anurak (Uttsada Panichkul), who is also a psychologist. He’s trying to help Dan rid himself of the Shadow. As the four students grow closer, they start to look into Trin’s death while simultaneously trying to help Dan understand what the Shadow actually is, which may not be something as sinister as initially appears.

Thoughts: I believe that The Shadow, or at least a part of it, is the manifestation of Dan’s sexual awakening. There are several moments in the series (in the later episodes) where he and the Shadow appear to be very intimate and one, where he even ejaculates in his sleep (something Josh teases him about). It’s also something Nai (who is clearly in love with Dan) witnesses for himself. It’s also something Brother Anurak is trying to get Dan to suppress, which falls into a common trope for Catholic Priests.

Anan is a very complex character. Damaged, he is also being manipulated by one of his teachers (Rastprapa Wisuma) who, despite being married, is pregnant with Anan’s child. She’s vile. Worst character in the series.

I love the comradely between Fluke, Poon, and Singto. These three work really well together and once Shinaradee enters the fold it’s just magical. It’s very different from what I first thought it might be, but it’s really REALLY Well done. Also, as a HUGE Fiat fan, I’m just stoked to see him back on my screen again. The first 7 episodes are available now on GagaOOLala and it will be continued with the second half of seven episodes soon so there will be more from Shadow…
