“VIP Only” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

“VIP Only” is a Taiwanese BL drama that revolves around Gu Jing (Stan Huang) and Liu Li (Xuan Chen). Gu Jing is a good chef who owns a creative, retro restaurant. He opens his restaurant anytime he wants. Gu Jing finds that there is a boy who often visits his restaurant and takes the quietest seat, that’s Liu Li. Liu Li is a BL novelist who rents a room upstairs from Gu Jing’s restaurant. Gu Jing often sends Liu Li a bowl of spicy beef noodles, whenever he seems sad or resolute. Slowly, Gu Jing becomes the person that Liu confides in, the person who keeps him company. Gradually, Liu Li realizes that his fantasies may be different from reality.

I have always thought that the variety of content that Taiwan creates is unique and attention grabbing with intriguing story line, and they don’t fear dipping their feet in all kind of stories. “VIP Only” seems like a normal BL drama with normal story line; the actors, their acting, and the story line seems decent. The pace of the story is slow but overall it seems like a very sweet, cozy drama that gives this cozy “Slice of life” feel. The way Gu Jing stares at Liu Li is so cute, and we can see the man falling in love. On top of Gu Ling’s good looks and Liu Li’s adorable presence, the food prepared in the show is a real showstopper.

There are lots of cliche moments in this show; after watching so much BL dramas, you can predict what’s going to happen. Though the actors are doing a good job playing their characters, something feels missing. The story line needs something refreshing, since it feels stale and bland. I do hope that in future episodes Liu Li comes out as a more confident and vibrant person because I feel like his character can grow so much more, since Gu Ling’s Character is almost perfect. It’s well written and the actor plays the character so well that the audiences will surely feel enraptured by his screen presence.

Overall, the story is nothing new, the pacing is too slow but the direction and screenplay are good. The actors are doing a good job but as I said before if the story had some fresh content or newness to it, it would have been a wonderful show.

  1. I don’t often comment on actors’ looks, but wow, these two men are incredibly attractive. (And so cute…feeding the Australian animals makes my heart flutter.)

I am watching this series on iQIYI, so it must be everywhere. Good job licensing team!

    1. Stan Huang is really handsome, his love interest though in this series doesn’t seem at par when it comes to physical looks and over all physique making the love story unsatisfying and unappealing. Sadly, there’s just no any form of chemistry between the two. There is nothing extra ordinary about the story too. I hope Stan Huang will have another BL series with a much better plot and a much better love interest.
