“Jazz For Two” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

Sight, scent, taste, touch, and sound—five senses that imprint themselves in our memories and hearts. And while all of them have an impact, sound is a stark reminder of how swiftly something can fade while leaving an indelible mark.

Nowhere is this more evident than in music. Music speaks to the soul when words falter, conveying emotions that defy easy expression. Its melodic language channels joy, love, anger, fear, and pain, forging connections that transcend barriers.

In the Korean BL series Jazz for Two, adapted from Keul Ra Jyu’s webtoon of the same name, music and pain serve as catalysts, drawing together its diverse cast. From the grieving Han Tae Yi (Ji Ho Geun) and the musically stifled Yoon Se Heon (Kim Jin Kwon), to the bully Song Joo Ha (Kim Jung Ha) and the amiable Seo Do Yoon (Song Han Gyeom), music intertwines their past and present.

Like with many Korean BLs, the initial episodes of Jazz for Two lay the groundwork for what’s to come, leaving much to interpretation while hinting at a myriad of possibilities. After Tae Yi is drawn to a song played by Se Heon, the two find themselves in a battle of wills over a piano room haunted by Tae Yi’s brother’s memory.

And that’s basically the gist of it. Two boys at odds. That’s all the first two episodes offer, and yet the grief and dreams these two are obviously dealing with as they face each other makes it hard to look away.

The dynamic between Tae Yi and Se Heon is palpable, as their initial friction gradually gives way to a complex interplay of attraction neither understands. Yet, they face external challenges with bully Song Joo Ha, whose hatred for Tae Yi stems from his sister’s attraction to his junior.

With compelling storytelling, strong chemistry among the cast, and better-than-expected acting, Jazz for Two makes me excited for the episodes to come and the story they hope to tell with this drama.

For a series that promises a compelling journey through love, loss, and the transformative power of music, check out Jazz for Two now on Gagaoolala.
