“His Man Season Three” Series Review (Ep.5 to 14)

This season was fickle, defiant and definitely a double-edged sword!

It’s very unlikely that people might find true love in a dating show, much less stay together after they leave the show. Surprisingly, “His Man Season Three” delivered a verdict that was obviously oblique and yet predictable. Some might have enjoyed the predictability, but let’s accept the truth- pitted against strong contenders like “The Boyfriend” & “Sparks Camp Season Two”, the sequel had veritable shortcomings that portray the glaring differences. Reality television has an upside that it isn’t mostly scripted, we are looking at real expressions or emotions; but that doesn’t mean it deviates from the normal melodrama that is so typical of love stories, especially love triangles (this show had two, frankly, twice the melodrama). Complexities were a galore, because the crew seemed to come up with diffident tasks that meant pitching love interests against each other. It was interesting to watch in the beginning, but with time, it became boring and outdated. Simply following the same format and creating unwarranted tension doesn’t mean improved ratings!

As already briefed in the “First Impressions”, we had an odd mix of commoners and sort of celebrities, all exceedingly handsome (but were they mature, well that’s doubtful).

Cha Jaeseung (33)- he is the oldest of the lot, has been running a croffle shop for 3 years and is a former personal trainer with 8 years of experience.

Son Youngjoon (28)- Works in an advertisement shooting team and runs a photo studio.

Hwang Minseon (24)- is majoring in acting

Bae Seongmin (29)- is currently working as a Korean tutor, has graduated from an engineering college, and is a former brand marketer.

Jo Myeongkyun (25)- is a model and an aspiring actor who has worked in morning dramas

Kim Seungjin (21)- hip hop dancer, also known by his stage name, Gadi

Kim Hanmin (27)- a hospital personal staff member and freelance model.

Kim Hwi (22)- a college student majoring in visual design.

Youngjoon & Hanmin

“The Winning Couple Who Fell Apart” (Also the one caught in an audacious love triangle).

Youngjoon fell for Hanmin at first sight and since then, it has only been Hanmin for him. He never swayed in his affections; which certainly makes us question his past relationship with Myeongkyun. There might be differed opinions, but I think leaving Myeongkyun to second guess their relationship without breaking up properly was entirely Youngjoon’s fault. Myeongkyun might have acted in a childish manner at times, but he was still harboring affection for Youngjoon who never set the boundaries clearly. That being said, Hanmin was already fickle in his attitude; even though he was attracted to Youngjoon, he was already set on exploring greener pastures. This is not what a man in love does, up until the finale episode, I wasn’t sure that he would choose Youngjoon. Hanmin choosing Youngjoon was more surprising than their breakup later, because it was expected.

Myeongkyun- Minseon

“The Underrated Couple who won in a Big Way”

For those following this show closely, Myeongkyun might have seemed like a villain in the beginning. The way he kept provoking Youngjoon without any proper context was infuriating; many might have thought that he was in the show to sabotage Youngjoon. It was only after they sat down for a calm conversation, that we learned the specifics of their past relationship. Youngjoon ended things without a proper explanation and Myeongkyun held onto the hope that someday they might reconcile. It wasn’t entirely his fault, my opinion about Myeongkyun changed a lot after that. Minseon on the other hand, is the most kindhearted, caring and patient man I have ever seen in a reality show. Despite observing the growing tension between Myeongkyun & Youngjoon, he always held onto the belief that one day he might win over Myeongkyun. His patience paid when Myeongkyun choose him as his partner, and they walked out of “Men’s House” as the second couple. As of now, they are officially together and dating in real life too!

Jaeseung-Seongmin

“The Most Melodramatic Couple who somehow made it to the End”

The “Jaeseung-Seongmin-Hwi” love triangle was epic and exhausting. Jaeseung had a crush on both Seongmin & Hwi, so he choose to put both his love interests in the same room. Only he didn’t expect that they may fall for each other. Seongmin seemed fond of Hwi in the beginning, but after learning about their age difference; his affections started wavering. Midway, he was caught between choosing Jaeseung and Hwi. Their relationship got more complicated as both Jaeseung and Hwi started battling for Seongmin’s affections. It took Seongmin a very long time to decide on his choice but eventually he chose Jaeseung, which broke Hwi’s heart. It was frustrating watching Seongmin, I never felt such contempt for a reality show contestant. As of now, Seongmin & Jaeseung are dating in real life!

Hwi- Seungjin

“The Contestants Who Were Fan Favorites but they ended in Friendzone”

Hwi & Seungjin weren’t exactly popular contestants, it might be because they were the youngest of the lot. But I really loved their individual characteristics. Hwi was so persistent in his efforts to win over Seongmin, it hurt to watch him in pain. Seungjin on the other hand is quite perceptive and caring; his close friendship with Hwi was one of the highlights of this show. Even though, they didn’t end up together, Hwi & Seungjin are now close friends and I appreciate their friendship.

Final Thoughts

Even though we got two couples this season, it was far more exhausting than its predecessors.

The same formulaic concept with slight variations isn’t helping the cause. Frankly, I think that I enjoyed the previous seasons more. It could be attributed to the contestants, but watching Season Three felt like a chore. I wasn’t exactly excited about it; I simply watched this show because I wanted to get done with it. There wasn’t a single couple that I was cheering on. So, in the end, those who won didn’t make any difference. Although, I’m happy that Myeongkyun found someone who cherishes him and loves him wholeheartedly.
