“The Trainee” Series Review (Ep.3 to 12)

Summary: Passionate student Ryan gets an internship as an assistant director where he meets Jane, an AD with a unique ability to extinguish the fires of people’s passion. Ryan’s suffering is vented to this year’s fellow trainees, including a couple consisting of account executive Ba-Mhee and editor Teh, Pah in the art department, and Pie in production. As Ryan continues his training, however, he finds that P’Jane is kinder than people think, to the point that Ryan’s heart sometimes skips a beat and it becomes his goal to win Jane’s heart.

“The Trainee” is a lighthearted BL series featuring OffGun in prominent roles. The series revolves around internships, careers, and personal growth. It follows the story of Ryan, Tae, Pie, Pah, and Ba-Mhee, recent college graduates who meet at an internship interview at GoodPick. Gun Atthaphan plays the character of Ryan, who is unsure about which company to choose for his internship. After listening to the advice of his close friend, he decides to apply for an internship at Goodpick. He gets selected as an intern in the Assistant Director department, where he meets Jane (Off Jumpol), his supervisor. Jane is strict but kind-hearted. Despite being strict, he teaches Ryan to be more open and brave in making decisions. The chemistry between Off and Gun is wonderful, and they are very comfortable with each other. Pie starts as a stiff and almost like a loner character, but as the series continues, her character becomes softer, more jolly, and open. She is a very talented character and View Benyapa did a great job playing “Pie”. Finally, let’s talk about our adorable couple, Tae and Ba-Mhee.

Tae, played by Sea Tawinan, is a very understanding and adorable character. I loved how he handles heartbreak by looking into the issue and not blaming others. He represents the epitome of positive traits in men. Ba-Mhee (Piploy Kanyarat) undergoes significant character development in the series. She transitions from being impulsive and reliant on her boyfriend to becoming independent and the best version of herself. During her internship with her supervisor Judy (Kapook Ploynira), Ba-Mhee’s chemistry with Judy is notable. It would have been sweet to see more of their interactions, but it’s clear that their relationship is more about admiration rather than romance.

Coming to the character of Pah, played by Poon Mitpakdee, he is the most innocent, adorable, and fun character in the show. He is good friend, honest and charming. Every time he was on screen, I couldn’t help but love his boy-next-door character. His friendship with Tae and the way he is loyal to his friends, especially Tae is admirable.

Apart from the main characters, I also admired Jo (Bobby Nimit), who played P’Jane’s supervisor in the series. He is calm, smart, and full of wisdom. He is the kind of boss that everyone wishes to work with. Despite there being lots of cast members, Baimon’s (Pompam Niti) character also played a significant role in the story.

The series is all about learning and grooming ourselves, and about coming out of our shell to make the best use of the talent and potential we possess but are afraid or shy to show. The show didn’t have any negativity except for the scenes when P’Jane’s ex, played by Green Phongsathorn, appeared, which later resulted in a positive outcome.

Overall, I enjoyed every episode of the series, it was cute, funny, and engaging

  1. This series started strong and then fell apart for me. I liked the setting, the ensemble stories, and the acting, but like many fans, I think the Ba-Mhee / Tae relationship overtook the series and sucked all the air out of it. Maybe it was the fact that neither Judy (nor Jane, for that matter) had any business kissing their interns. It was cringy almost to the point of icky.

Young love has its ups & downs, break-ups & make-ups, and I hate to make everything BL, but a PahTae blossoming romance would have been a more fun ending.

I’ve purchased every DVD available since 1000 STARS, but I passed on this one. (OK, I did still buy the t-shirt!)

3 out of 5 for me.
