“Chaser Game W: Power Harassment Boss Is My Ex-Girlfriend” Series Review (Ep.1 to 8)

Summary: Harumoto Itsuki works for Dynamic Dream, one of Japan’s leading game development companies. She has a good reputation for her work and has been appointed as the leader of a game project that collaborates with companies in Japan and China. However, her client from China turns out to be her former lover, Hayashi Fuyu, whom she broke up with in college. Hayashi Fuyu, who has held a grudge against Itsuki for abandoning her, decides to take the opportunity to control the project and impose unreasonable demands only on Itsuki. Meanwhile, Itsuki’s feelings for Fuyu begin to waver.

Based on the manga series of the same name, “Chaser Game W” is a love story between two women, Fuyu and Itsuki played by Yuuka Sugai and Yurika Nakamura. Fuyu and Itsuki were in a romantic relationship during their time at university. However, due to certain reasons, Itsuki ended the relationship, which caused Fuyu to harbor resentment towards her. This led Fuyu to making unreasonable demands that Itsuki felt compelled to meet, as she was Fuyu’s boss. Nonetheless, it’s often said that if there are still feelings involved, no amount of bitterness can erase them. This dynamic unfolds beautifully in the show, and I enjoyed witnessing their reunion and the rekindling of their feelings.

I’ve always been a fan of Japanese shows and series because they realistically depict LGBTQ stories. One of the themes I enjoy is the second chance romance between ex-lovers who become co-workers, particularly in the boss-employee dynamics. While this setup is typical in many enemies-to-lovers dramas and might come off as sappy or cheesy, I went into this show with the same mindset, expecting it to follow a familiar pattern. To my surprise, I found myself genuinely enjoying it! The ending left me hoping for a season two, and luckily, we’re getting one.

I feel and I have always said that if actors do their best and are capable enough, they can turn poorly written shows or dramas into something much more entertaining. In this case, both the story and the actors were fantastic. Now I know that people have diverse tastes when it comes to shows and series, as everyone has individual preferences. As a result, this particular show might not appeal to everyone. But I think audiences need to appreciate such dramas that are surprisingly cozy to watch. I hope the Season Two comes out as fine as the first season and the audience appreciates it.
