The theme for this feature is “Sweet, Endearing”
The transient trope in quite a few BL dramas, the humorous candor paired with an adorable casting can work wonders for even an abysmal script, not that we are bringing you any subpar content. The dramas in today’s article will lighten your mood, alleviate your sadness and make you smile fondly.
Ossan’s Love Returns
A franchise that has inspired a Thai remake and captivated audiences for the past six years with their rambunctious humor and ambivalent chemistry, “Ossan’s Love” is probably one of the most love Japanese BLs ever. In the recent edition, Tanaka Kei & Hayashi Kento return to reprise their adorable characters, Haruto & Maki. As they start living together, the housework causes undue stress to the newly wled couple. They decide to hire a housekeeper to help them with the household chores. Ironically, the person who turns up as the new housekeeper is the retired Kurosawa Musashi (Yoshida Kotaro). The sequel feeds on the epic chaos that this trio cause as they reevaluate their relationships. We also get a healthy side dose of budding romance between the supporting couple, Izumi (Iura Arata) and Rikudo (Miura Shohei).
Love in the Air Koi
If you were an ardent fan of the Thai adaptation “Love in the Air” and loved the main leads, but have doubts about watching the Japanese version: fret not. Because the Japanese version has managed to keep the spirit and essence of the original alive. Starring Nagumo Shoma, Hamaya Takuto, Suzuki Asahi & Nagatsuma Reo (who are playing the roles portrayed by Boss-Noeul & Fort-Peat), the show focuses on two close friends, Rei and Kai. The troublesome Rei drags Kai to an illegal race course, where they get separated. Rei is saved by his infamous senior, Arashi who is strict, disciplined and utterly gorgeous. As they bicker endlessly, Rei and Arashi slowly stem past their differences to grow closer. On the other hand, Kai is saved by Fuma, businessman extraordinaire but a playboy at heart. Kai has his own baggage which makes him vulnerable but also defensive. The magic is alive as the Japanese actors embody the finer nuances of their Thai counterparts.
Wandee Goodday
I had my own doubts about this new pairing that GMMTV pitched last year. I loved watching Inn Sarin in “The Miracle of Teddy Bear” but I wasn’t so sure about Great Sapol. It seems my fears were unnecessary, because GreatInn’s chemistry is topnotch and off-the-charts. Because of a broken heart and drunkenness, Dr. Wandee (Inn Sarin) becomes daring, entangling himself with Muay Thai fighter Yoryak Phadetseuk (Great). Both have trunk loads of personal baggage and decide to get into a “Friends with Benefits” relationship. But as they spend time together and get to know each other better, Wandee and Yoryak end up falling in love. While Inn Sarin embodies Wandee’s insecure nature and cuteness, Great as a seasoned actor compliments him well. The storytelling was mediocre but the actors elevated the entire experience!
Perfect 10 Liners
Everyone need that one show which doesn’t make a lot of sense but you still find it addictive; “Perfect 10 Liners” is THAT drama. Starring an ensemble casting, the show focuses on Arm-Arc (Book Kasidet & Force Jiratchapong), Yotha- Gun (Perth Tanapon & Santa Pongsapak) and Faifa-Wine’s (Junior Panachai & Mark Jiruntanin) individual stories. First-year students draw lots to determine their peer mentors and, by a stroke of fate, Arm lands himself in the exclusive circle of “Perfect 10 Liners,” a group comprising extraordinary students from various years. By various twists and turns, he ends up getting acquainted with his mentor’s mentor, Arc. Arc is hot-tempered, foul-mouthed and arrogant. Despite his reservations, Arm is drawn towards Arc. As they interact more, Arm starts falling for his senior who doesn’t care much about anyone else but him. ForceBook have this amazing chemistry that shines through, no matter which role they portray; you can’t help but adore them. Apart from them, I’m also rooting for Perth and his new onscreen partner, Santa. They seem sweet together and I’m looking forward to watching their love story as well.
Your Sky
Due to an unforeseen situation, a naive freshman Teerak (Kong Kongpob) and the campus’s popular senior, Muenfah (Thomas Teetut) agree to pretend to be a couple, but their fake deal turns into real. No matter how cliche this storyline seems, the lead pairing have a refreshing chemistry. Teerak is being harrassed by the campus bully, Oh. To escape his clutches, Teerak requests his best friend’s elder brother, Muenfah to act as his fake boyfriend (not that Oh is convinced by their acting). As they get better acquainted, Muenfah starts falling for the sweet, endearing Teerak. Kong & Thomas are so cute together, that I really don’t mind watching the overused trope!
Sugar Dog Life
A love story between Sakuraba Isumi (Tanaka Koki) a short, baby-faced university student who is a great cook, and Amasawa Kyosuke (Tawada Hideya) a tall, sincere police officer with a natural, easygoing charm. When I first read the synopsis, I wasn’t enamored by the age-gap factor. Frankly, I even questioned the chemistry between the lead pairing. But I was sold after watching the first episode. Tanaka and Hideya have a natural camaraderie which translates into some great chemistry onscreen; the age-gap is barely noticeable and I loved watching their interactions. The slow burn romance was the icing on the cake and if you don’t mind watching fan-subbed videos, then this show should be high on your watchlist!
Every You Every Me
Across different universes, two souls manage to find each other- the synopsis of this show is as misleading as the premise. If you are thinking that this is a reincarnation saga where the main couple are reborn into different timelines and meet again; then think again. “Every You Every Me” is an anthology of three different stories played by a leading pairing in the BL industry, Roi- Inn (Mick Monthon) and Pun (Top Piyawat). The twist to this tale is that Roi and Pun had been secretly dating throughout the shooting of those movies, and they go through a painful breakup while working on their last project, only to reconcile years later. Mick and Top have a beautiful chemistry; their portrayals were realistic and you can’t help but swoon, every time they are together onscreen. I’m actually hoping we get to see them again in a new project. This was one of my most favorite drama this year!
