“Chaser Game W2: Utsukushiki Tennyotachi” Series Review (Ep.1 to 8)

After watching the second season, I felt the show was not up to my expectations. Compared to this season, I think I enjoyed the first season better as there was a little plot in the name of “Lovers to Enemies to Lover Again” trope but in the second season, I felt lots of awkwardness between both characters, irrelevant plots, and too many plot holes. The story seems to be a forced continuation, the miscommunication and misunderstanding between both characters seem irritating; because when Season One ended, I expected that there would be rapid development between Itsuki (Sugai Yuuka) and Fuyu (Nakamura Yurika). Fuyu’s marriage issue will be resolved, and she will accept herself but the way it was handled, and on top of that they introduced Itsuki’s ex which led to more problems between them.

There were a few things that I liked, the story ended beautifully no matter how much they dragged the show, and they were able to show the struggles women face when they have to stand in front of society and their family members to fight for their love and her child. It expresses a woman’s journey while she fights for her love amid strict societal norms and rules. Now, as much as I still prefer Season One to Season Two, I feel that the sequel had better intimacy between them than the first one. It was good to see them being so sweet and loveable to each other. I was satisfied when Fuyu was finally free and able to spend her life with Itsuki; because Itsuki had someone who supported her when she came out of the closet, her Grandma. Fuyu has been hiding her true self from her homophobic mother. It was frustrating at one point to see her mother react like that.

The last two episodes were what made it worth watching as it ended up giving us closer view of the couple in a good way, with a happy ending. The way Fuyu and Itsuki matured and handled thing were perks of the show. Both Sugai Yuuka and Nakumura Yurika did good job aside for few awkward moments in the show, they were mostly good. Chise as Yeoreum was show stealer as she was unlike other exes, respectable anough to just let both of them be together instead of being the so called “VILLIAN”.With two talented leads, I wished Season Two could have been something more but if you wish to watch a GL which show struggle’s and societal pressure for a woman who loves someone from the same gender and want a fast- paced GL with great music (I forgot to mention, this show has amazing OST), you can add this show to your watchlist. But I would recommend watching it simply and not with critical eyes, otherwise you’ll focus on more on the flaws and less on the story.
