“Fragrance of the First Flower Season 2” Series Review (Ep.3 to 12)

Reconciliation is all about figuring out your differences and trying to resolve them; in the end, it depends on how much two people love each other!

The first thing that I noticed as soon as I started watching this sequel was the mature screenplay; it doesn’t gloss over the fact that all adult relationships are difficult, no matter the sexuality or gender. So, while Tin Ting takes a dive into the unknown, based on her feelings and preferences, Yi Ming remains indignant about maintaining their status quo; that is until she is faced with the unfortunate choice a breakup. People mostly take their loved ones for granted, until they are forced to accept the consequences. Yi Ming has her own share of problems too; her divorce does give her the freedom to exist independently but her absence isn’t conducive to her son’s wellbeing. From trying to act as a long distance mother to her special child to socially accepting her relationship with Tin Ting, Yi Ming had a lot of thinking to do. Lin Zai Zai & Lyan Cheng star in this wonderful “Coming-of-age” romance that addresses most issues that same sex couples face in the beginning stages of their relationship.

Sometimes Love isn’t Enough

Tin Ting & Yi Ming face tones of issues as soon as they reconcile and start their new relationship. Their personalities clash, and they often end up having a difference of opinions. Tin Ting is a free bird, and yet she takes up a full time job, so she could support Yi Ming financially. She makes choices and starts planning their future. Unfortunately, Yi Ming doesn’t share the same concerns for their future, in fact she hasn’t even thought about it. Between juggling her job and finding time to meet her son, Yi Ming has a lot on her plate. She isn’t ready to accept their relationship and call Tin Ting her girlfriend. She wants to exist without labels, something that Tin Ting doesn’t agree with. This inevitably leads to a breakup, as Tin Ting moves out. Distance indeed makes the heart grow fonder, Yi Ming recognizes Tin Ting efforts after she is gone. She makes amends, reconciles with Tin Ting and introduces her to her son, Xiao Zhe. The show ends with a beautiful montage after Yi Ming seeks permission from Tin Ting’s mother to marry her, and they exchange rings.

Is it a Worthwhile Watch

At times, it was frustrating watching Yi Ming being so indecisive but love always wins!

Even though it was aggravating, Yi Ming’s fears and insecurities weren’t unfounded. She has problems reconciling with the fact that their relationship is socially acceptable. She also has to consider her son’s needs who may or may not get along with Tin Ting. In the end, all is well that ends well. Yi Ming learns to face her fears, lest she might lose Tin Ting.
