“Boys in Love” Series Review (Ep.3 to 12)

Teenage love is all about curiosity, figuring out things & forming new bonds!

Stepping onto the threshold of adulthood, today’s teenagers have umpteen number of problems. Some are worried about their love lives whilst most are trying to figure out their future discourse. Which subject to study and where? Will our friends & loved ones make it to the same university? If not, how to bridge the distance when we are studying at different places? Technology does help but do long distance relationships sustain for long times? “Boys in Love” tries to answer these diffident questions in an adorable yet knowledgeable manner. We have three different couples with their own issues, working past their differences towards a brighter future. So, does it work for them?

Shane & Kit- The Unbalanced Couple

Looking at them, Shane (Mick Metas) & Kit (Luke Peemsan) are an atypical couple. They shouldn’t have made past the first few episodes. And yet they do, despite their variable differences, they somehow work which is intriguing. As against Shane who is a typical book nerd, Kit is a free bird. Shane lives by a set of rules while aiming for a scholarship abroad. Kit has a rich family to support him and doesn’t have any future prospects in sight. When Shane starts tutoring him, it is utter chaos. It takes time for these two to bridge the distance, because Shane is full of fears and insecurities while Kit lives each day as it goes by. The one thing that keeps them together is Kit’s unwavering patience and understanding. Every time, Shane acts out of character, Kit stands beside him & supports him unconditionally. This relationship won’t work if Kit didn’t have the patience of a Saint. Mick & Luke make an adorable couple, so there’s that!

KimMon- My Favorite Second Lead Couple Ever

There is always an instance when the second lead couple becomes a fan favorite. Kim (Chokun Puttipong) & Mon (Aston Ratiphat) are as atypical as the main couple. Kim is happy-go-lucky guy while Mon might not be overtly studious, but he is smart. Moreover, Mon’s mother is higher up at the school, and she spends quite a lot of time monitoring them before she accepts their relationship. Mon has his own fears and anxiety which stem from his Mother’s overprotective nature. And yet, Kim handles them both perfectly. While he is gentle and caring with Mon, he is understanding with Mon’s mother. In due of course, he wins them both. Chokun & Aston have a refreshing chemistry, they look good together, and they have a beautiful camaraderie!

TarPer- The Utterly Chaotic Couple

We don’t get a final resolution about this couple until the finale episode, but they do share a kiss and there is something going on. Per (Ken Kanthee) is more obvious in his affections while Tar (Paul Tanan) seems oblivious or doesn’t want to act on his emotions. Tar is quite a chaotic character and Per matches his energy. Ken’s acting skills have improved and their chemistry shines through in the later episodes after Per kisses Tar. I just wish we got more screentime with these two, so their romance could have been well-defined!

Final Impressions

I had forgotten how good teenage years are, they are bittersweet memories that stay forever!

I’m pretty sure there are many who still miss their good old-school days, friends and the fond memories they share. This show portrays the common fears faced by the teenagers in their formative years, it is realistic and endearing. They are confused, their decisions might be influenced by hormones or emotions; but everyone learns from their mistakes and grows mature. Everything turns into an experience of a lifetime. Don’t miss out on this show!

  1. This was a 5/5 series for me, specifically because it portrayed a queer friendship group in modern day Bangkok the way I wanted WE ARE and PERFECT 10 LINERS to do. I also loved the good communication between the couples in this series.

Finally, so cool to see teachers as mentors. I love that they invited the boys over to help them move – both as muscle and as a way of showing the boys what their futures may look like.
