“The Promise of the Soul” Series Review (Ep.5 to 12)

Soulful yet entertaining, there was a literal soul transaction happening here!

I often pondered while watching this show- “If the person you hate to the core suddenly starts changing, will you start falling in love with them?”

Because irrespective of the soul inside, the person has the same face. I guess it was easier for Ye Haiyuan because he knew from the offset that Xia Zefang’s soul has been replaced with that of his Grandfather. This show singularly concentrated its form on establishing the fact that Zefang’s soul had been replaced with his Grandfather’s. Oddly enough, apart from their blood ties, they have no similarities. Zefang was infamous for being a playboy and had a notorious reputation; one of the main reasons why Haiyuan despised him too much. Also, Zefang dated his stepbrother, Guan Riqing just to spite him. They had too much bad blood between them, so I was actually surprised when the stoic & reserved Haiyuan fell for Xia Cha so easily. It might be the fact that Cha has a personality that is completely opposite to that of his grandson. He is kind, caring and thoughtful to the fault. His innocence and naivete call to Haiyuan’s protective nature. Despite the abundant age gap & the differences in their thought process, Haiyuan & Cha fall in love, that too irrevocably. Yes, they have their own disagreements, but with time they learn to overcome them!

Storyline & Characters

The pilot episodes already set the tone for the entire storyline. Xia Zefang (Martin Wong) & his Grandfather, Xia Cha (Huang Hao Yung) swap souls when they fall down the staircase. Ridiculously enough, the first person that Cha meets when he wakes up is Zefang’s classmate Ye Hai Yuan (Kenji Fan). Haiyuan doesn’t have a good impression about Zefang and avoids him like the plague. Until the soul swap happens and even though, he doesn’t want to believe it; Cha’s behavior soon convinces him otherwise. Thus begins their cohabitation tenure because Cha is decades old and doesn’t know anything about the kids from the current generation. As Haiyuan helps him to adjust to his current situation, feelings develop. Cha has a hard time accepting the fact that he is falling for a guy. Strangely enough, he is able to see the red thread connecting him to Haiyuan. He assumes that Haiyuan might be his late wife’s reincarnation and that makes it easier for him to accept Haiyuan’s affections. Obviously, their bond extends beyond this belief as Cha comes to terms with his owns feelings & prejudices. Martin Wong does an excellent impersonation of older man stuck in a young body. Everything from his demeanor to his posture, spells how much he has embraced Xia Cha’s characteristics. Kenji Fan plays his part of being a possessive yet overprotective boyfriend. They are precious!

Is it a Worthwhile Watch

It is, if you can stem past the part that Haiyuan is child trapped in a grown man’s body!

Despite his serious attitude, Haiyuan is extremely childish and insecure. It might e because of his family situation, which isn’t exactly ideal. Maybe, that’s why he starts falling for Xia Cha who seems safe & secure. Cha becomes his safe haven away from a home where his mother is a mistress and his stepbrother hates him. Guan Riqing ((Yaron Qiu) & Haiyuan do reconcile in the later episodes but it isn’t without warfare. The supporting couple, Jiang Bai Ling (Hung Wei) & Chen Qian Sui (Li Ting) do their jobs well. In short, this show is a well-rounded attempt at delivering a soulful romance!
