“Secret Lover” Series Review (Ep.3 to 10)

Taiwanese BLs these days are on a whole new level and don’t even get me started on the fan service!

So, just days before I caught Wang Jyun Hao & Chance happily kissing in their fan meet event, I wondered how far Taiwanese idols would go for the sake of fan service. I mean, even popular Thai BL pairings don’t take it that far, given the fact that they have been together for eons. Taiwanese BL actors are really out there blowing everyone’s mind with their explosive chemistry. It could also be attributed to the fact that they might never star again together, so they make most of the situation they are in. Now, getting back to the review, the show had a simple premise- the decades old “Friends to Lover’s” trope. The classic tale never expires; the slow burn romance, the quiet pinning after your friend, coming to terms with the fact that you love your very dramatic, idiotic friend and the actual confession that could lead to a relationship or otherwise, a sad breakup. In Tuo’s case, he is lucky enough to end up with the person who has always been the center of his universe, Junxi. Tuo knows it, Junxi’s parents know it, their best friend, Xioayang knows it too. Junxi is the only one who isn’t privy to his own feelings. Their relationship has more ups and downs than the potholes on the roadside. Let’s skip the dramatics and dive into the review ASAP!

Storyline & Characters

The story only revolves around Han Tuo (Chance) and Jun Xi (Wang Jyun Hao). It is their universe and everyone else is a side character. Tuo has been secretly in love with his best friend since childhood. Being unable to confess his feelings, he has been fending off Junxi’s suitors by dating them instead. The charade is going well until Junxi gets tired of being single and seeks “Relationship Advice” from his super successful casanova friend. Tuo takes this as the chance to seduce Junxi and thus begins their romance. Tuo had a lonely childhood & was often bullied. Junxi was his all-time protector and his home became Tuo’s personal haven. He loves Junxi and his parents love Tuo as much as they love their own. Somewhere down the line, Tuo develops feelings for Junxi because he has always been reliant on him. His passive, possessive nature stems from his need for love & affection. Junxi fulfills that need, no matter what; as a friend and later as a lover. Their relationship isn’t without problems, but gradually they learn to stem past those issues. Junxi gets over his fear of rejection when his parents happily approve their relationship. And Tuo tries to mend his damage relationship with his father. Chance & Wang Jyun Hao have an awesome chemistry. The show banks on that and their excessive need to kiss each other even when they aren’t shooting scenes (Yes, like everyone else, I do believe they are secretly dating, there is no better explanation for their extremely clingy behavior).

Is it a Worthwhile Watch

Tuo & Junxi’s journey wasn’t an easy one, but they still end up together and that’s what matters the most!

I especially loved the scene where Junxi defiantly stands in front of his parents, and they laugh out aloud because they already know those two idiots are dating. Junxi’s parents are low-key shippers, and they were never against their relationship. Junxi’s cries in relief, and it shows how much he craves their approval, how important it is that they accept Tuo as a part of their family. It was a beautiful scene and will be forever etched in my memories. Apart from that, the show ebbs and flows smoothly with a few minor glitches, but they are barely noticeable (because Tuo & Junxi distract you with their kissing scenes).
