Comedy BLs are rare gems that are hard to find. To get the comic timing right is a skill that many actors can’t accomplish. So, this genre is barely surviving in the BL industry. But that doesn’t mean, we don’t have good shows that are lighthearted & have an irresistible comedic flair!
Me and Thee
It is impossible to watch this show and control your laughter. The main reason for this unreasonable guffaw is Thee. Portrayed by Pond Naravit, Thee is a loudmouthed, Thai lakorn crazy mafia boss. Engaged in money laundering business, he operates a perfume company as a front. Unexpectedly, he crosses paths with Peach (Phuwin Tangsakyuen), one of the best photographers in current times. As they engage in playful banter & serious conversations, our supposedly terrifying mob boss starts falling for his calm & composed love interest. Chemistry was never a problem with PondPhuwin, but this is the first time that they are portraying characters that are completely opposite to their prior portrayals. Especially, Pond is surprisingly good in his rendition of a wealthy, dramatic businessman whose entire personality screams over-the-top.
Chosen Home
When I first started watching this drama, I wasn’t sure of what was happening. Like Sakuta (Tegoshi Yuya), I was instantly annoyed by Genichi (Oikawa Mitsuhiro). It takes time to warm up to this 50 years old main lead who is slightly quirky and yet quite kindhearted. The story is centered around Genichi who wants to form a “Clamp” with a like-minded individual. His only desire is to buy his own house. Unexpectedly, he crosses paths with Horuta (Shiratori Tamaki). Abandoned by her parents, Horuta proposes a deal when she realizes that Genichi is gay-pretend to be my father and in exchange, I will buy you a house. What starts as a farce turns serious when Horuta’s homeroom teacher, Sakuta becomes a part of this charade too. This show is a lighthearted comedy about an older gay man, who desperately wants to settle down and have his own family.
Me and Who
The show ends this weekend and definitely needs a spot in this article. I wasn’t a huge fan of the main leads, but this drama just turned me into a part of their fandom. Phopthorn (Park Anantadej) is a man of misfortune. Despite working hard, he can barely make ends meets. Once while cursing his fate, he lands in an accident. Only to wake in an alternate universe, in the body of Apo, the second son of a business tycoon. Not only that, Apo is engaged to the handsome Mom Rajawongse fiancé Suriya (Big Thanakorn) who has the power to read minds. Suriya abhors Apo and only agreed to the marriage because he wanted to form a business relationship with Apo’s family. With his ability to read minds, Suriya quickly deciphers that Phopthorn isn’t Apo and proposes a deal to continue the charade. Only the farce turns real, when Suriya starts falling for the sweet Phopthorn. BigPark have a natural chemistry & their comic timing is great. Also, Poppy Ratchapong as Butler Francois is another hilarious character who will make you laugh out loud!
MuTeLuv Diva Deva Mata
“Air Dolls” Nevia (Fluke Nattanon), Ingky (Lego Rapeepong), Fews (Soodyacht Patsit), and Katrina (Neo Trai Nimtawat) are a fierce group of high school influencer divas. However, their channel’s follower count isn’t budging, so they turn to Goddess Dalop—known for her power to elevate influencers—for help. It works—at first. When Katrina accidentally offends the deity and ends up possessed by the goddess, Nivea, Inky, and Fuse must find a way to drive the spirit out of her body. The more they try, the more chaos comes their way. I never thought that I would see Fluke acting like a bratty diva, his whole persona transforms as he portrays Nevia. Yacht and Neo are equally believable and hilarious in their interpretations. But I loved Lego’s portrayal of Ingky the most, he instantly transforms into a beautiful, fragile heartbreaker who is equal parts alluring as annoying. I really wished this show wasn’t a miniseries, because all four actors have a great comic timing and playing queer characters comes naturally to them!
A Man Who Defies the World of BL Final
We are in the final semester of this laughter riot. The journey started in 2021 when the main character Mob (Inukai Atsuhiro) realizes that he lives in a BL world. He likes girls, so he must turn down any hot guys who approach him. But since it is their world, there’s just no escaping the public displays of affection around every corner. Throughout the ensuing three seasons, Mob falls in love, has an unexpected breakup and returns to becoming a resident “mob” character who is hellbent on resisting all kinds of BL temptations. In the current season, Mob is simultaneously confessed to by his classmates Hatano and Kikuchi. How long can he resist this temptation and remain a side character. Only the finale episode will reveal the answer to this question!
Reloved
I’m not sure if this show can be categorized as a comedy BL. But main lead Akin’s (Golf Kunavut) comic overtures surely are hilarious, so we are adding this title to our list. Old flames Than (Peter Paratthakorn) & Akin meet unexpectedly when Than’s son & Akin’s niece start attending the same school. Although Akin is ecstatic on meeting his ex-lover, Than wants nothing to do with Akin. But our happy-go-lucky main lead is undeterred as he continously follows Than around, trying to find the reason for their breakup. Golf & Peter have a good chemistry, so don’t sleep on this show!
