While we look forward to some fresh new pairings in 2025, there was a lot happening in 2024 that invariably caught our attention. Some old couples, some new; last year catapulted quite a lot of BL couples into new fandoms. We saw their rise, complimented their acting skills and overall chemistry, while reveling in their stardom. I had my personal favorites, choices that resonated with my taste. Boys’ Love may have fallen under the business model of Yaoi, with its softcore porn over plot in many recent Thai series. But happily Japan skipped that memo, continuing to put out thought-provoking series that take the established BL genre to new places. Using pre-existing notions of what to expect from a series where two men kiss, and applying the societal views on the character’s specific circumstances.

“Love is Like a Poison” First Impressions (Ep.1 to 3)
“All is fair in love and lies” seems to be the theme for TBS’s “Love is Like a Poison”. A mature Boys’ Love story between two men from the world of lawyers and legal cases. Young lawyer Shiba Ryoma played by Hama Shogo has been handed a hard case of proving whether a cryptocurrency company used an influencer’s likeness without his permission. Like a domino falling, he meets conman Haruto played by Hyodo Katsumi. Shiba has been unable to find any blatant legal ways to make his case. But like a second domino following the first, Haruto’s volunteered voice recordings bring the validity of the case before the judges. Despite Shiba’s misgivings and knowledge that Haruto is a conman, he still allows the man into his life and home.
