“Dangerous Romance” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

GMMTV’s latest high school romance “Dangerous Romance” uses the age old trope of “Poor vs Rich”, where we have the rich “Kanghan” Krittin Sukprasoet (Perth Tanapon, Love by Chance S1 & S2) and Sailom Homchan (Chimon Wachirawit, Ghost Ships) playing the main lead couple. This series has a distinct “My Gear your Gown” kind of vibes with better writing but better performances. With that being said, I am honestly enjoying this show. Unlike “My Gear your Gown”, which was lacking in chemistry, “Dangerous Romance” delivers. I like the slight differences in the two series. Like hundreds of previous teenage dramas, we have another school setting for this show as well. But I am kind of okay with it as we get to watch the characters grow and mature. I feel this series would not be as good if it didn’t have a school setting like this.

One of the most interesting things about this show is watching Sailom and Kanghan’s tight bonding with their best friends. Auto (Marc Pahun) and Guy (Euro Thanaset) are always right there defending their friend, Sailom. Auto is a sweet and lovable character while Guy wants to start a fight with anyone who dare to hurt his friends. Nawaphon (Pawin Kulkaranyawich) and Max (JJ Chayakorn) mostly get along with Kanghan’s nefarious plans and support him. But they do offer advice when he decides to take things too far. Nawa and Max are definitely thecomic relief in all this drama.

We are only two episodes in and I am already loving the chemistry between Perth and Chimon. It is quite visible and you can feel the tension in the scenes between these two. The way Sailom looks at Kang in anger is intense.

We have the privileged Kang thinking money buys everything and Perth plays the privileged part very well. On the other hand, we have Sailom, who knows that money does not buy everything as he and his brother Saifah struggle every month to pay the family debt. Kang firmly believes that he has the world at his feet and no one should dare challenge him; except for Sailom, who knows daily struggles and does not turn a blind eye to his vicious acts; instead, he stands up for his friends and what is right. It is very heartening to watch.

As Sailmon and Kang clash at every turn, we see the frustration in Sailom’s eyes and the smugness in Kang’s smile. Sailmon is not afraid to stand up for his friends, and Kang pushes every button when it comes to Sailom. Their clashes are epic, with Kang stooping down to some very low and disturbing tactics to get even with Sailom. The way Sailmon can recite math equations while on a motorcycle, or give wrong answers to a test to prove a point, is very cute and endearing. However, things change when Kang sees what Sailmon goes through every month if he cannot pay the debt. Faced with the gravity of the situation (when he saves Sailom from the debt collectors), Kang finally realizes the abysmal life that Sailom lives. As he comforts Sailom, it’s apparent that Kang regrets his past actions.

This show is going to be a bumpy ride. I can already see that. I hope we get to see the true test of friendship and love as they learn to respect each other. I feel Kang will learn to see Sailmon in a different light, while Sailom will understand Kang and his life more as we progress. I cannot wait for the rest of the series. I am excited to see where Kang and Sailmon will go and how each character will develop. I want to join them on this journey and watch them experience the true power of love.

  1. Wow, delving into the ugliness of the sex tourism “industry” is pretty brave. The fact that this series still feels romantic when throwing topics like hardcore bullying, corruption, economic disparity, and loansharking at us in the first three episodes alone is pretty remarkable. Dangerous indeed!
