“Pluto Series” First Impressions (Ep.1 to 4)

When I was a little kid, we only knew about our nine planets. Since then, we’ve downgraded Pluto but have discovered that other solar systems and stars are common. So life is probably quite prevalent- Buzz Aldrin

For those wondering about the epiphany of this quote, it might probably resonate with Ai-oon, one of the main leads in the show. She has spent her entire lifetime standing in the shadow of her successful twin, Ob-oom, who was a capricious two-timer. Chao Planoy is slowly becoming one of the most popular Thai GL authors in the industry, with almost 6 of her novels being adapted into live-action series (GAP, Blank, My Marvellous Dream Is You, Affair, Apple My Love, Pluto) and two others are in production (Mate The Series & Us The Series). Her stories mostly depict angsty and catastrophic relationships. “Pluto” is no different, what sets it apart from the other adaptations is the production quality and the excellent casting. Starring Namtan Tipnaree in dual roles alongside Film Rachanun, the storyline is mystique yet entertaining.

Synopsis-

Ai-oon is the disappointing twin of successful and beloved Ob-oom. They aren’t close. On Ob-oom’s wedding night, she takes Ai-oon aside and makes a request of her. Ob-oon and her husband Paul will be going away for their honeymoon and she’ll be leaving something important behind: a lover, May, she hasn’t broken up with—and she wants Ai-oon to do it for her.

In the early morning following the wedding, Ai-oon learns that the newlyweds got into an accident. Paul has passed away and Ob-oom is in a coma. When Ai-oon decides to fullfil her sister’s request, she’s shocked to learn that May is both blind and a woman. She finds herself unprepared to complete the task.

Caught in a Romance Unaware

The noticabing thing about Namtan and Film is their sensual chemistry. From the first time, Ai-oon lays his eyes on May, their connection is viable & fierce. She is innately drawn to this mysterious woman who is blind and supposedly her twin sister’s girlfriend. The same twin (Ob-oom) who is currently hospitalized after she wed a billionaire in a grand ceremony. The said husband dies in an accident, leaving Ob-oom in a comatose state. As such, Ai-oon decides to fulfill Ob-oom’s last request- breakup with my girlfriend. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned; as Ai-oon is invariably drawn towards May. She knows it is wrong, May doesn’t realise that she is not Ob-oom but her sister, Ai-oon. In the initial episodes, she even suspects May of orchestrating her sister’s accident, and yet she can’t break free of the strong attraction she feels towards May. On the other hand, May was hurt by a goon when she defended a notorious heir so that her father would leave Ob-oom alone. May belongs to a rich family but unfortunately her father is homophobic and against her relationship with Ob-oom. She is smart, decisive and strong-willed; which piques the question- how did Ob-oom manage to fool her while dating a billionaire?

The Gravitating Love Triangle

We also have a gripping love triangle unfolding in the midst of the budding romance between the main leads. Yes, I’m talking about Pang (Ciize Rutricha), Capt Phim (Kapook Ploynira) & Jan (Earn Preeyaphat). Pang is Ai-oon’s friend, Phim is investigating Ob-oom’s accident and is dating Pang while Jan is Ob-oom’s best friend, who was looking into Ob-oom’s accident. These three have absolutely no connection until Jan meets Phim to uncover the truth behind Ob-oom’s accident. Jan is drawn to Phim’s kind nature, but she is dating Pang. Pang on the other hand, has had a lifetime crush on her best friend, Ai-oon. She starts feeling uneasy as Ai-oon falls in love with May. Pang has always believed that Ai-oon was straight, because she has only dated men. Seeing her with another woman makes Pang anxious and it starts straining her relationship with Phim, who unfortunately learns the truth belatedly. Will this lead to their breakup? Will Jan get her chance with Phim instead? Frankly, I prefer seeing Phim with Jan, it’s obvious that Jan is curious and intrigued with Phim as against Pang who was merely with her because she couldn’t date Ai-oon.

Is it a Worthwhile Watch

I have mixed feelings about this show, it is an in-between!

Namtan & Film make a compelling couple, they have a strong chemistry and their romance is fraught with mystique and suspense. We still don’t know if May is indeed blind, or she is faking her illness; given her strong mentality, she could do so to figure out who assaulted her that night. Ai-oon is too confused between her loyalty towards her sister and her growing affections for May, this is a recipe for disaster. The storytelling lags in some places and is unevenly paced, that is the only drawback here.
