The Magic of Player: A Conversation with Thai GL Author Sixnine

The fact that Girls’ Love genre is suddenly at a peak isn’t a surprise. Rivaling in the revolution led by the “Gap Series” couple Freen Sarocha & Becky Armstrong, GL industry is trending and insight. As such, locally available GL novels are being churned out at an alarming rate. While the genre still has to catch up with its BL counterpart, GL authors are at par with sharing the popularity that Boys’Love authors enjoy. One such novelist is Sixnine, who recently announced the adaptation of her uber popular novel “Player Yuri”. We sat down for an introspective conversation with the talented author to dig deeper into her psyche & novels!

1) Thai GL is becoming an immensely popular genre these days. As a GL author, what is your opinion about this progression? Do you think adaptations are contributing to the trend?

Obviously, I immersed myself in the GL industry as a reader before I became a writer. At the time, the GL industry was very quiet. It was like a small alley in a massive market. So it’s very exciting and fulfilling to have witnessed GL’s journey in Thailand from that time to its current glory days. What happened not only provided opportunities for writers and GL actresses, but also allowed for more diverse content. As a result, it not only promotes the success of writers and actresses, but it also broadens the audience’s perspective and understanding. It reflects changes in societal acceptance of LGBTQA+ individuals.

Concerning the adaptation of GL novels into series or other media, I believe it has a significant impact on changing society because the media has the ability to reach a large audience. It raises awareness in both the target group and outside of it. It establishes GL as a common and normal norm. It can also make people who were previously uninterested in the topic more aware and open to LGBTQA+ issues, as well as see them as normal in society. Until LGBTQA+ people are accepted as normal by society and every family, I hope GL keeps expanding.

2) Let’s begin the interview with your first published work, “Lost in You”. How was the feeling about your seeing your novel getting published? What is the story about?

My only hope when I started writing was that someone would stumble upon my novel and read it. I was thrilled just to reach 300 views. Following that, I took my work more seriously and sent it to a publisher. In the first email response I received from the publisher, I was rejected. But after speaking with the editor, I received a second email stating that Lost in You would be printed. You have no idea how ecstatic I was all week-long—I did well! HA HA HA.

Ice, the protagonist of the novel” Lost in You”, decided to leave Thailand because she was bored. She picked Australia because she had a friend there. There she meets C, a stunning woman with black hair and an arrogant expression. C was asked by Ice’s friend to pick Ice up when Ice got lost in Sydney. It was as if it were destiny. It made the trip more exciting than Ice had anticipated. After they met…Why not read it to find out for yourself?

3) Your next novel “Kiss” seems to be based on the “Friends to Lover’s” trope but it has a twist. Talk to us about the premise for this story?

If “Lost in You” is a romantic drama with a hint of comedy, “Kiss” is most likely a romantic comedy with almost no drama. “Kiss” began when Rin traveled to South Korea and accidentally met Proud, her childhood neighbor. Because of Proud, the immigration authorities detained Rin. For whatever reason, Proud used every trick up her sleeve to hold onto Rin after they were freed… which clearly caused Rin a lot of problems. In this novel, they are friends with benefits. The story is adorable, lively, and cute. The characters are spunky, cunning, and witty. And, of course, there is a plot twist. Five of the six novels I wrote will include a plot twist similar to SIXNINE (69), my first alias—where, by flipping the number, 6 becomes 9.

4) Your bestseller “Hello How Are You” spells a mischievous, naughty romance. What inspired this story line?

If I were to discuss “Hello, How Are You”, I would have to mention Palmy, a well-known Thai singer, and her song SonKlin (Hide the Smell / Hide the Love). When I watch the music video for that song, a lot of thoughts go through my head. The lyrics and melodies captivate me. The MV inspired me to write a somewhat heavy yet thrilling piece about the longing of former lovers who reunite. Because of this, “Hello, How Are You” is a feisty tale about ex-lovers who quarrel after meeting again by chance—I mean, reunited.

5) “Player Yuri” is being adapted. Congratulations are in order. How excited are you about this development? What does the storyline entail?

Thank you, kha!!

As the author of “Player”, it goes without saying that I’m overjoyed that a team has found my work and has the potential to make it more well-known and loved. ^^

“Player” is a story about a game between two attractive women. One approaches the other seeking something in return, while the other is too clever to be misled. There is a lot of depth and charm to both characters. Player has it all: romance, comedy, and drama. If the novel doesn’t make you fall head over heels for the characters, I would like to invite you to watch the series as well. HA HA.

6) It seems that “Player Yuri” might be connected to your previous work “Hello How Are You”. Can you share the interrelation between the two?

You could call “Player” a sequel to “Hello, How Are You”. If you read Hello, How Are You first, you may be more engaged with the story because you are familiar with the characters’ backgrounds. However, they can be read separately. The main characters in Hello, How Are You are Jay and Prang. Phi Ploy served as a decoy to keep the reader guessing who would end up with whom at the start of the story. However, Phi Ploy is incredibly colorful and charming. She won over most of the readers simply by strutting around in her high heels. That was why I decided to write Player. And because of Player, many more people fell in love with Phi Ploy and Pun.

7) “Third Person” seems like a tragic romance with mystique elements? How did you incorporate these in your storytelling?

Of the six stories I wrote, “Third Person” was the most challenging for me. I wanted to trick readers and play on their emotions. I wanted to know how they’d feel before and after the truth was revealed and how drastically different the two emotions are.

“Third Person” is a love story with a very complicated timeline and plot. The tone is solemn. Throughout the narrative, the readers will be deceived and enticed to pursue the truth. A sense of melancholy, vibrant nostalgia, puppy love, and adult love are all present. The characters are gray and mysterious. “Third Person”, in my opinion, will instill a conflict in the readers’ minds and leave them thinking about it for days after they’ve finished reading the book.

8) “Ma Chérie” incorporates a romantic drama where a sour relationship turns sweet. What kind of heartbreaking relationship do the main couple share?

It’s not exactly heartbreaking. The main characters simply had to part ways because of an event in their past. This story has a warm, sweet, and slightly heavy tone, with a winter setting in Hokkaido. As the present-day relationship is nurtured and restored, the past event is progressively brought to light. “Ma Cherie” is another story where I believe the main characters have many endearing qualities.

Note: One of the main characters is from the Player universe. แปล

9) Are any other of your novels in the process of being adapted into TV series? If yes, please share more details about them?

Not yet. Adapting a novel into a series allows me to see my work in a new light, and if an opportunity arises in the future, I will gladly accept it.

10) What are you working on right now? Talk to us about your future BL novels?

I’m working on Player 2. It will be released early this year. I also have plans to release Player (which is being developed into a series) in English and Spanish for interfans very soon. Please kindly support my work, na ka.

The BL Xpress would like to express their gratitude to Ms.Sixnine for this exclusive.
