“Sweetheart Service” Series Review (Ep.1 to 12)

Yu Ha, a job seeker who must do whatever it takes to stand on his own without help from his family, and Min U, a developer desperate to escape the pressure to marry. An unexpected “fake dating contract” ties them together. Though it starts as just a deal, real feelings slowly begin to grow between them.

The series has an exciting start. Yu Ha works part-time as fake dates for money and is asked by Min U to fake date him to get his family off his back. This series has some great tropes to make it into a romcom or very emotional romantic series. In the first three episodes, I was very much hooked and was anticipating being blown away, but sadly, it lost its charm somewhere halfway through the series.

I felt bored, and the series dragged out too much. Though the chemistry and scenes between both main and side couples were interesting and worth watching, due to a poor plot, even good actors couldn’t save it.

Yu-Ha (Kim Hyeon Seo) and Min U (Lee Jae Hyeop), as characters, were able to portray how a relationship that starts with fake-dating would seem like. Awkwardness and confusion, which slowly melts into understanding and familiarity. The open ending for the side couples irritated me because I was rooting for them. But their story was left halfway, leaving us hanging and creating scenarios of whether they ended up with each other or are still just flirting around. Su Yeon’s character was another thing that made me feel like “Okay, she’s something, and she will definitely ruin stuff”, and also I was a little confused by her characterization.

Overall, the series started strong but lost direction midway. By the end of the series, it has some redeemable moments, but overall, it did not meet its initial potential.
