“Frozen Valentine” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

Dreams often come true, you just need to keep trying!!

“Frozen Valentine” feels too familiar, it is a story you have watched hundreds of times before. The supposedly naive, dull-looking protagonist is in love with the hottest person at school. She tries her level to make their one-sided affections known, but either gets rebuked or their crush is already dating another hot person. They separate, meet years later, the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan and the said crush ostentatiously falls for her. There is drama, some delicately crafted chemistry and lots of yearning. Adapted from the novel “Frozen Valentine” (Frozen Valentine ปิ๊งรักคุณพี่เย็นชา) by Ta Kling Kaem Chai (ตากลิ้งแก้มใจ), the show stars Natty Natthamon & Yeepun Purichaya in lead roles. The first two episodes are intriguing enough to grab your attention!

The Storyline & Chemistry

As a teenager, Pingrak (Yeepun Purichaya) had a huge crush on Charm (Natty Natthamon), the hottest girl in school. Charm was dating her classmate, Mint (Nycha Nichapat). She is very loyal and dedicated to her girlfriend and, as such, snubs advances from other people, Pingrak included. Pingrak feels discouraged seeing Charm & Mint together. Years later, their paths collide when Charm is chosen to lead a GL series. Pingrak auditions for the same show, and she is selected to play Charm’s love interest. Charm doesn’t recognize her and even after years of separation, Pingrak still has pending feelings for Charm. As they spend time together, Charm slowly starts to fall for Pingrak.

The first episode doesn’t challenge Natty & Yeepun’s chemistry. For those who don’t remember, Natty was recently seen in “Khemjira The Series”. She played the GL couple opposite Nycha Nichapat, who plays the supporting role, Mint here. I have no idea why the casting directors thought it was a good idea to cast Nycha and Natty together, because they have a smothering hot chemistry; enough to eclipse Natty’s budding romance with Yeepun. Thankfully, by the second episode, Charm breaks up with Mint and the story refocuses on her blossoming love story with Pingrak. Natty & Yeepun have a decent camaraderie, enough to override Natty’s chemistry with Nycha.

First Impressions

The first two episodes establish the main leads’ past connection & their present reconnaissance!

Pingrak has rich parents who have planned out her entire lifetime. And although they do consent to her playing the lead in a GL Series, her mother isn’t comfortable with people assuming that she might be a lesbian herself. Charm doesn’t remember Pingrak AT ALL. She probably doesn’t recall the nerdy-looking girl who followed her everywhere, while she was busy dating Mint. In the present, even though Pingrak drops hints, Charm never catches up on them, because she doesn’t recollect her past interaction with Pingrak. It is an interesting reconnection because Pingrak’s naivete and kind nature draw her in. Also, the narrative quite often maintains the stance that it is essential to conduct workshops in a safe environment, so the actors can feel more comfortable. I feel that setting these personal boundaries to ensure their safety is rather important, even during the initial stages when the actors are getting to know each other. The show professes this idea insistently, and I’m pleased they used this directive in the storytelling.
