Dominant Alpha Girls in GL Dramas

The latest trend in the GL industry is projecting female protagonists with alpha vibes. They are dominant, possessive and successful. In short, the whole package deal and certainly swoon- worthy. They are also exceedingly beautiful and deliciously hot.

My Only Sunshine

When I first started watching this show, I was immediately ticked off by Flint’s (Atom Aphichaya) behavior. She is a powerful luxury car executive, her entire persona screams dominance. Whenever she walks into a room, people pay attention to her every move. She has allure, is beautiful and also insanely possessive about her younger sister’s best friend, Sun (Mersedes Siripath). The combination is quite attractive. Sun has spent her childhood years nursing a crush on the older Flint. Things get complicated when Sun becomes their brand ambassador and is entangled in online scandals. Flint starts paying extra attention to her and thus their love affair begins. Like most alpha characters, Flint is temperamental and quick to misjudge. You often wonder why Sun gives in to her whims, but their romance quickly moves forward despite the fact that Flint often misunderstands Sun & accuses her of inappropriate behavior.

Frozen Valentine

The story starts in their school days. Pingrak (Yeepun Purichaya) is an average looking nerdy girl with a huge crush on Charm (Natty Natthamon), the most popular girl at school. But Charm is in a relationship with Mint (Nycha Nichapat) and, as such, she rebukes advances from anyone who approaches her in a romantic manner, Pingrak being one such ardent admirer. Her rebuttal leaves Pingrak heartbroken. Fast forward, Pingrak is now in college and after a makeover, she turns into a beautiful belle. Surprisingly, she auditions for an upcoming GL series and is paired opposite Charm, who doesn’t remember her. As they shoot together, Charm grows fond of Pingrak without realising that she rejected her during their school days. Charm also has a dominant personality, and she gets jealous easily. She doesn’t like anyone getting close to Pingrak and loves to hoard all of her attention. She is clingy, and it is actually amusing to watch her do cartwheels to get Pingrak’s attention (given the fact that Charm rejected her first).

Play Park

Another alpha personality with dominant tendencies is Lilin (Tan Duangkaew). She is a sharp, no-nonsense heiress from a wealthy business family. Things get complicated when the board of directors wants her to close the deal related to an amusement park. She meets Ing (Yada Narilya), a hardworking single mom who is the amusement park manager. There is instant attraction as Lilin and Ing play the game of cat and mouse. After learning that Lilin is going to close their park, Ing tries all sorts of tricks to dissuade her. Lilin is smart and sees through her plans but still amuses her. Despite having an affection for Ing, Lilin tries her best to accomplish her goals. She might seem reserved but is quite good at tackling difficult situations. A solid character on whom Ing can rely, because she knows that Lilin will always protect her, despite all odds!!

Clairebell

This was my first time watching a sapphic romance with a prison setting. The storytelling was innovative and the chemistry between the main leads drove the narrative forward. Wrongly convicted of drug possession, Bell (Pangjie Paphavarin) begins her fifteen-month sentence only to find herself targeted by a powerful group within the grounds. Her only path to safety is to go to Claire (Mable Siriwalee), a violent inmate no one dares mess with. Claire is like a mad dog, everyone steers clear of her and no one intercepts her path, not even the troublemakers. As Claire & Bell grow closer, Claire becomes her protective shield. Whenever anyone messes with Bell, Claire deals with them ruthlessly. The story surmises on the mystery surrounding Claire & Bell’s wrongful conviction, as they fall in love in the midst of turmoil.

Gap The Series

This show skyrocketed FreenBecky’s popularity and cemented their position as the numerous uno queens of the Thai GL industry. “Gap The Series” scripted a success that heralded the age of Thai GL. Sam (Freen Sarocha) & Mon (Becky Rebecca) are childhood acquaintances. Long after Sam first came to Mon’s rescue when they were kids, Sam is unambiguously Mon’s idol. In order to be near her, Mon gets a job working under her. When they finally meet again at the office, Mon is surprised by her icy exterior and coldhearted attitude. As they spend time together, Sam grows fond of Mon. Sam is an insanely possessive and jealous character. She is often overprotective too. Freen & Becky’s chemistry sparked a legendary pathway for the barely known genre. Till date, “Gap The Series” remains the standard, unmatched & unparalleled!

Harmony Secret

Two heiresses fighting for a business deal fall in love instead. Their fathers have been lifelong rivals and the rivalty extends to their children. Mewika (Sonya Saranphat), the only heiress of Superior Group has just joined her father’s department store conglomerate. Coincidentally, she is pitted against her childhood rival, Aiwarin (Lookmhee Punyapat), the only heiress of Orianna Group. As against Mewika, who has no work experience, Aiwarin is smart and sharp. She also has a huge crush on Mewika, who only thinks of her as a rival. Years pass, they compete head-to-head for the high-stakes Greater Duty-Free concession, a multi-billion project. To uncover Ai’s secrets, Mewika decides to seduce her. Ai has a dominant personality, she doesn’t give up easily, even if the circumstances are against her. Lookmhee & Sonya have a natural chemistry, they easily embrace any character they play!

Girls Rule

We have a whole hoard of dominant alpha personalities in this show. Prim (Namtan Tipnaree), Shasha (Milk Pansa) & Min (View Benyapa Jeenprasom). Prim is heartbroken after her ex-girlfriend, Bambi (Film Rachanun) disappears without any explanation. When she returns a year later and hopes for reconciliation, Prim decides to play hard. Namtan is known to play dominant roles tastefully and Film follows her lead. Shasha is a top supermodel and has been actively pursuing Gorya (Love Pattranite) who is interested in Prim. When Prim doesn’t return her feelings, Gorya decides to enter into a “Friends with Benefits” relationship with Shasha. Milk & Love have a fiery chemistry in this show, with Milk playing her dominant role well. Min gets entangled with Praew when she saves Min from her abusive boyfriend. Min has always only dated men. She decides to explore her sexuality with Praew and the result is a passionate kiss during one of their photoshoots. Despite being curious, Min boldly takes over the dominant role in their budding relationship. View & Mim are new to this game, but their chemistry is exquisite.
