“Love Alert” Series Review (Ep.1 to 10)

“Love Alert” is a Thai BL drama that leans more into emotional content than fantasy-based romance, an instant love story with no context. Although it looks like a typical love triangle, as it moves forward, it becomes a nice journey of exploring and accepting feelings as well as personal growth.

The story follows Jimmy (James Hayward Prescott), a charming but flirty person who gets tangled in a complicated web of relationships involving Plaifah (Fam Thanuphat), Toh (Kad Ploysupa), and Teh (David Matthew Roberts). What starts as attraction and convenience slowly turns into something deeper, forcing the characters to confront their own intentions and emotional immaturity. Jimmy has one of the worst characters in the history of BL series for me. I didn’t or couldn’t understand what the hell he was thinking or doing? Toh is a typical naïve and innocent character who cries himself to sleep but still at the end accepts redemption. I don’t blame him as I liked him.

One of the strongest parts of this series is how natural the relationships feel. Instead of rushing into romance, the show builds tension through awkward conversations, misunderstandings, and emotional hesitation. The chemistry between the leads is subtle but effective, especially in quiet moments where nothing is explicitly said. Instead, everything is felt.

The drama also has frustrating moments where our characters make selfish decisions, create unnecessary misunderstandings and complicate their relationships themselves. This makes the story feel more grounded and relatable. The pacing was slow, especially if you prefer fast-moving plots like me, but I enjoy slow-burn romance or slow-paced stories too when it’s done in the right way.

Jimmy’s character, in particular, does frustrate a lot of the time. His indecisiveness and questionable choices are intentional, frustrating, and they can make it hard to root for him at times. Basically, it is not a flashy or overly dramatic series, it’s the kind of show that grows on you slowly, especially if you enjoy character-driven stories. A thoughtful, slightly frustrating, but ultimately engaging drama about love that comes with consequences.

Personally, I enjoyed watching the series, but I did not like Jimmy. While watching, I did feel that not all viewers would enjoy it. It’s for someone who doesn’t lose patience while trying to understand the characters and why they are doing certain things and what their thought process is. So, if you want to watch a show which sometimes feels too fast and suddenly too slow, this is the series.
