My Favorite Asian BLs So Far (2024)
Admittedly, my favorite Asian BLs for this year (so far) is an eclectic mix and perhaps not of a ‘mainstream’ conformity. I am an individual who does not follow any set of rules in establishing what I find to be my favorite. Therefore, I tend to not like what most others find as fashionable or currently trending. I am also not an avid follower of any particular BL artist, although I do think some actors are better than others.
Heart Fluttering Bromances That Aired in 2024
Bromances probably came into existence and became popular because of China’s rigid censorship on queer representation. Even though their popularity stems from heart fluttering moments that spur imaginary romance between the fictional characters, Bromances are fast becoming a stable part of the BL genre!

Our Favorite Asian GLs So Far (2024)
2024 was surprisingly the “Year of GLs”. From a few succinct shows like “Gap The Series” & “Fragrance of the First Flower” which made their mark on the international platforms, we didn’t have any sapphic representation before. The tables have turned, with several prominent releases this year, and we have new fandoms coming into existence, more couples gaining traction.

While we are having a constant outpour of Japanese and Thai BLs, Korean BLs seemed to be slow on uptake this year. We didn’t have any continuous projections, but the shows that premiered were indeed a worthwhile experience. Our Favorite Korean BLs So Far (2024)
A great drama relies on many elements—acting, direction, cinematography, music, and more—to create something that truly resonates. As an emotional viewer, I’m especially drawn to stories that dig deep, even if it takes some effort to piece together the message the series is trying to convey. This definitely applies to the Korean BLs that have resonated with me the most in 2024. Three series, in particular, stood out, checking all the boxes and making each viewing a deeply personal and introspective experience that will stay with me.

Still, Japanese BLs are slowly evolving beyond the conventional boundaries and bringing us realistic stories that aim at portraying queer culture; they are diversifying, and we are reaping the benefits. Our Favorite Japanese BLs So Far (2024)
I’ll be honest, very few Japanese BLs disappoint me. They tend to range from slow, comforting stories to narratives that either touch on important topics or border on the controversial. But no matter what story you get, there is almost always a deeper meaning woven into the series, one that may stand out in the moment or may hit you later after the series has aired.
So, it isn’t easy narrowing down a list of favorites. Rather than focus on what makes one drama better than another for me, I’ll list the dramas from 2024 I find myself recommending the most to others.
