While we are having a constant outpour of Japanese and Thai BLs, Korean BLs seemed to be slow on uptake this year. We didn’t have any continuous projections, but the shows that premiered were indeed a worthwhile experience. We had some complicated adaptations with nuanced storytelling and casting that made waves across the continent. Spilling the beans, let me share my favorites from 2024!

Sharing the “Addiction for Love” with Director Yuan Danop
Breaking through stereotypes seems to be Director Yuan Danop’s favorite pastime. Recently in news for his Thai remake of the Chinese BL adaptation “Addicted Heroin”, Mr. Danop had a careful consideration in mind while recreating the original which was widely popularized because of its sexual undertones. There were mixed responses; while some applauded his attempt to tackle the subject with sensitivity, others were disappointed with the lack of NC content (which is fast becoming a norm in the Thai BL industry). Is breaking out of the mold a diffident procrastination? We sought answer to this question as we sat down for a thoughtful conversation with the talented filmmaker!

“The Spirealm” Series Review (Ep.1 to 78)
Yes, indeed I did watch this phenomenal series and, while not a gamer nor understanding much about the intricacies of this series, I treasured its theme and ambition. This series is breathtaking in its presentation, cinematography, storytelling, and acting. I was completely mesmerized and astonishingly could pretty much follow the gist of the story minus the minutiae and detailed storylines. Being a Westerner, I also got hopelessly entangled by the names and relationships of individuals. None of that mattered to me, however. My focus was on the two main protagonists and the heart of their story.

“The Trainee” Series Review (Ep.3 to 12)
Summary: Passionate student Ryan gets an internship as an assistant director where he meets Jane, an AD with a unique ability to extinguish the fires of people’s passion. Ryan’s suffering is vented to this year’s fellow trainees, including a couple consisting of account executive Ba-Mhee and editor Teh, Pah in the art department, and Pie in production. As Ryan continues his training, however, he finds that P’Jane is kinder than people think, to the point that Ryan’s heart sometimes skips a beat and it becomes his goal to win Jane’s heart.
