“Boys Like Boys” Bobo: Redefining Modesty

“Who will be brave enough for love?”

This question consistently reverberates throughout the journey that the “Boys Like Boys” contestants undertake to find their better halves. The first non-scripted LGBTQ+ and BL dating reality show from Taiwan saw contestants from different walks of life. Whilst his shy demeanor seemed like a deterrent to this very purpose, Bobo managed to defy logic to become one of the most popular contestants on the show. On this sojourn, he made friends and grew more confident. We sat down for a tell-all with Bobo, who despite his reclusive personality shone brightest on this reality television!

1) Despite working in the public sector, you were highly reserved and found it difficult to communicate your thoughts. Has “Boys Like Boys” bought any changes to your lifestyle?

The most direct change has been an increased ability to be myself. Previously, I always felt a sense of distance in social interactions, and I didn’t have true friends to confide in, which was very stifling. After the show, everyone became aware of my identity, and being able to express myself authentically has greatly improved my mood.

2) Why did you choose to be a part of this dating show? Did you truly believe that you might find your better half here?

After being single for three years prior to the show, I was eager to find a partner. It also felt like the right time to come out to those around me. Although I initially joined with a tentative mindset and didn’t expect to be selected, once on the show, I fully embraced the dating experience, believing it possible to meet my other half!

3) From the earlier episodes, you seemed to be interested in Gino? Why were you so drawn to him?

As an introvert, I prefer to connect with new people over common interests, which makes it easier to start conversations. From the first impression based solely on appearance, Gino seemed like someone who enjoyed outdoor activities.

4) Your close friendship and camaraderie with Eri was celebrated by the fans? There were many who even shipped you. What kind of changes has Eri bought to your life?

I truly admire Eri, who exemplifies what it means to ‘be oneself boldly without impacting others’—something I’ve struggled with, as I’m too concerned about others’ perceptions. Eri has helped me gradually rediscover myself, even pointing out that nobody really cares about me lmao! Meeting him has been a major turning point in my life.

5) Assuming you are offered a BL role, would you be interested? If yes, then what kind of scripts will interest you?

I would definitely be interested in trying out for a role, especially in a sci-fi gay film. I love sci-fi movies, and such a theme is quite rare and sounds intriguing.

6) As an active member of the LGBTQ community, what is your message to the international BL community? What do you want people to know about you?

Although society has become more open, discrimination still exists. We must work together as an era of gender equality is within reach! Remember, masculine individuals can also like men—please don’t assume that all gay men are effeminate. We are diverse.

The BL Xpress would like to express their gratitude to Bobo for this exclusive. We are also grateful to Ms. Sherry Liu from Gagaoolala for arranging this interview and graciously working on the translation as well!
