Have you ever been awestruck by the chemistry between a BL pairing? Have you ever felt disillusioned when a show ends, because you won’t be able to see the lead pair again? Have you been plagued by the anticipation of watching them in Season Two again? If you answered yes to the above questions, then you are right on track. This feature will reflect my thoughts on fresh pairings that tugged at my heartstrings!!
Fake Fact Lips
You might be well acquainted with main lead Sato Yusuke if you have watched “Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss!”. Also, with the other lead, Hori Kaito, if you have watched “Mr. Sahara & Toki-kun”, “Cosmetic Playlover” & “The Journey to Killing You.”. So, you might have wondered about their chemistry. Wonder not, because we stuck gold with this unusual pairing. Sato & Hori star as childhood friends, Zen and Ryo. They have been rivals since high school and now work at the same company. They have spent years competing over everything. One night, after another loss, Zen ends up drinking with Ryo, and their conversation ends in another bet- whoever makes the other fall in love first wins. As we delve deeper into their budding romance, we come to terms with Ryo’s unrequited love and Zen’s confusion about his own feelings. Sato & Hori have a unique chemistry; everytime they are onscreen, you are amused by their camaraderie. Their comfort levels are amazing and, it translates to excellent chemistry onscreen!!
School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To
Another pairing that might have taken you by surprise. We were first introduced to main lead Kan Hideyoshi in the 2024 adaptation “Although I Love You, and You?.” His new co-star Fujimoto Kadai starred in the lesser known adaptation “Smells Like Green Spirit”. When this project was announced, I had my doubts about their chemistry. Kan instantly squashes those doubts with the intense portrayal of a besotted teenager, Watarai. Fujimoto sweetens the act playing his shy love interest, Hioki, a second-year high school student, who is separated from his close friends in class and finds himself alone when it comes to deciding on groups for the school trip. Surprisingly, he is invited by a boy from the same junior high school to join a group of four handsome guys. At first, Hioki is shocked by their invitation. But as they spend time together, the most reserved guy in the group, Watarai begins to grow closer to Hioki. Unbeknownst to Hioki, Watarai always had an one sided crush on him. Kan & Fujimoto have a strong chemistry, enough to make you wish that the show might be renewed for S2 soon!!
Smile After Tears
The ensuing love triangle in this show is ridiculous, and yet I’m in awe of the main leads. You might get fixated with the main lead’s handsome looks and worry about whom to ship with? Zhang Jun Jia (Chang Chvn Chia) is a transfer student who is optimistic and cheerful but burdened with family and financial pressures. Things take an interesting turn in his life when one day, during a school band club performance, he meets the radiant lead singer He Yan Kai (Ho Yen Kai). At the same time, he reunites with a past acquaintance, Zheng Diao Qin (Cheng Tiao Chin). As Jun Jia spends time with He Yan Kai, they slowly grow closer. Lingering affections exist between Jun Jia & Diao Qin too. It is almost impossible to decide if Jun Jia looks better with Yan Kai or Diao Qin. I’m busy shipping them all, don’t ask me to choose one!!
Double Helix
Toxic relationships are on the rise, they are the current trend in the BL industry. Cheng Yi Chen (Lu Si Tong) and Lu Feng (Ayden Sng) are school friends who reunite at university. While staying in the same dorm room, they slowly grow closer and inevitably fall in love, only to be torn apart abruptly by family expectations and societal judgements. Lu Feng is forcibly sent abroad by his rich father while Cheng Yi Chen transfers to another university. Years later, they meet again when Lu Feng returns home and Cheng Yi Chen is employed in his company. Even after years of separation, their romance is reignited, and they reconcile, only to be torn apart by Cheng Yi Chen’s mother and her judgmental prejudices. Ayden & Si Tong have a fiery chemistry, both onscreen and offscreen. This fresh pairing is slowly growing popular, and their easy camaraderie is the icing on the cake. I’m already anticipating Season Two or maybe a new project in the works with Ayden & Si Tong as main leads again!!
Flower Boy
This is PearlPoo’s second project together, so they aren’t exactly a fresh pairing. But the flip in their dynamic makes this storyline quite intriguing. “Flower Boy” projects an unusual love story between a cold-hearted, playboy vice president & a beautiful young man from a rare flower tribe. When Scent (Pearl Satjakorn), the vice president of a prominent perfume company, starts searching for the little-known Mudan tribe, little does he know that he would end up falling for the very person he plans to victimize. When he falls down the hillside, he is saved by Gaysorn (Peak Peemapol), the successor to the Mudan tribe. Gaysorn is an enchanting being whose natural fragrance mesmerizes everyone around him and Scent plans to create a revolutionary perfume. He tricks Gaysorn into following him to the city, where he and his employee continously conduct research on his sweat, without his knowledge. Unfortunately, Scent ends up falling for Gaysorn and their romance takes a tragic turn when Gaysorn learns the truth. PearlPoo’s natural chemistry shines through, and it is oddly addictive!!
Soul Mate
The most anticipated release of 2026 stuns with a solemn romance that is a tearjerker. Starring Ok Taec Yeon & Isomura Hayato in lead roles, this journey spans across Berlin, Seoul and Tokyo, where their characters experience a breadth of emotions: unforgettable pain, suffering and, ultimately, joy. After inadvertently destroying the life of his best friend, Narutaki Ryu (Hayato) abandons everything and leaves Japan. He nearly dies at a church in a foreign country before he is saved by a Korean boxer named Hwang Jo Han (Taec Yeon). They slowly grow closer over casual conversations, long-distance phone calls, until Jo Han is pushed into a life-threatening situation. Ryu reaches out and suggests living together. Ryu supports him unconditionally while Jo Han pursues higher studies while doing a part-time job in Japan. Sadly, Jo Han is diagnosed with an incurable disease, which serves as a setback to their relationship. The show doesn’t promise a happy ending, but it depicts a beautiful romance that serves as a bridge between individuals from two different countries.
