“Cases between Us” Series Review (Ep.1 to 36)

What happens when a mischievous young master meets a strict police officer??

Set in the Republican era, “Cases Between Us” strings mystery and crime investigation to render a beautiful bromance. The story hinges on the strong chemistry between the main leads who form an unlikely partnership. “Cases Between Us” follows Zhao Shao Shang, a young man with a love for traditional culture, and Yuan Hong, a talented police officer. The old Beijing streets are lit with bizarre murder cases and these two form an investigative unit that focuses on winning justice for the victims. Zhao Shao Shang & Yuan Hong come from vastly different backgrounds. Initially, they butt heads continuously with distrust and doubt reckoning their relationship. But as they settle into their roles, the story streamlines into an entertaining crime thriller that is quite thought-provoking.

Storyline-

Yuan Hong (Kido Ma), the new chief of the Criminal Investigation Division Four, comes across Young Master Zhao Shao Shang (Zhai Zi Lu) while investigating his first case. Zhao Shao Shang comes from a wealthy background, his father is the Minister of Education. Born in an affluent family, Zhao Shao Shang lives a carefree life and has an intense love for antiquities. Yuan Hong is the illegitimate son of General Da Shuai. He was top ranked in the military academy, initially probed to join the army. But his mother’s sudden death changes his career choice, and he joins the police department to investigate her death. Despite being a lazy loofer, Zhao Shao Shang has a knack for investigations. Initially, Yuan Hong isn’t impressed with his nosy attitude. But Zhao Shao Shang follows him around and provides valuable insights that help him solve the mystery pertaining to the cases they investigate. As they spend time together, Yuan Hong learns to trust Zhao Shao Shang and they become a formidable team.

The Chemistry-

Yuan Hong & Zhao Shao Shang’s bromance is epic. Initially unapproachable, Yuan Hong grows to appreciate Zhao Shao Shang’s presence in his life. Zhao Shao Shang is essentially quite mischievous and humorous. As they grow closer, Yuan Hong smiles more and his lonely home seems more lively. Zhao Shao Shang pushes his way into Yuan Hong’s life and their banter is endearing. They argue endlessly, have major differences of opinion and yet, at the end of the day, they get back together, because they can’t seem to be apart. Zhao Shao Shang repeatedly risks his life to protect Yuan Hong. Their relationship feels natural, and the chemistry is addictive. Yuan Hong and Zhao Shao Shang’s bromance is the strongest highlight of this show!!

Final Impressions

As they delve deeper into the murder cases, Yuan Hong & Zhao Shao Shang are forced to pry into secrets that change their course of lives!!

Everyone seemed to be quite disappointed with the rushed ending, but I’m more excited about the prospect of Season Two. I’m kind of obsessed with our detective duo, and I’m looking forward to the potential sequel. We don’t know if Yuan Hong survived the final battle with his father. Zhao Shao Shang ends up in Japan while everyone believes that he is dead. Will Yuan Hong reunite with his silly yet meticulous partner?
