“We Are” is a medley of romantic tropes and sappiness that is very welcome in the BL scene. It is the quintessential romcom, an easygoing series about a group of friends who find love and support each other throughout the process. “We Are” is refreshing and fun and even though it doesn’t give you any drama, the romance and friendship are enough to drive this 16-episode series, and the different couples give us a wide range of romantic tropes, there is no screen time wasted because all the stories develop at different paces, keeping us engaged from start to finish. As a big fan of slice of life shows with minimum conflict, “We are” was such a treat, and I hope there is more demand for such low stakes BLs in the midst of all the high drama, high production and educational ones.

Fall Under the Spell of Cherry Magic
There’s something magical about Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni Nareru Rashii, 30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい). I first fell in love with the live-action series starring Eiji Akaso and Keita Machida as the adorable Adachi and handsome Kurosawa when it was first released for international viewing on the streaming platform Crunchyroll (though you can order the Blu-ray wherever Japanese music and movies are sold, including CDJAPAN). It was such an adorable and innocently sweet story that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

“The Blue Hour” Movie Review
This is a serendipitous find and what a find it is. Sometimes one needs to go back in order to proceed forward. Admittedly, this is a movie that goes way back and by today’s standards in the BL world might be considered ‘old’ and maybe thought of as remote. Its reviews were less than stellar, which is incredulous, and I think based on a misunderstanding of what this movie was all about. I hesitate to reference it as a BL, however. More aptly, it certainly is a gay film. A gay film highlighted by elucidations from the inner thoughts of a mind of a tortured young gay boy, struggling with his ‘coming out.’ If you see it as that, it will have more meaning.
“My Stand-In” Series Review (Ep.3 to 12)
For better or worse, we don’t choose who we fall in love with, but we can determine what we do with that love.

We are again slow on uptake, as the BL/GL world is brimming with premiere releases. That doesn’t mean, we don’t have fresh news or exclusives from our favorite genre’s. Fasten your seat belt, we are taking you on a ride!
“Only Boo” Series Review (Ep.1 to 12)
This is a Thai BL that frankly stands out for me. I had almost given up on Thai BLs because of their unoriginal story lines and sameness. Frankly, they were getting banal. And with the title of this one, it well sort of screamed out to me to skip it because of its vapidity. I am so glad I did not. I loved this series but with two caveats.

Capturing the Heart & Soul: A Tell-All with “Allure of the Siren” Director Ark Saroj
An iconoclastic filmmaker who has pushed the boundaries with his varied repertoire, Ark Saroj is out and proud in his personal and professional lives. After making his directorial debut with “Getaway”, a Singaporean BL web drama shot in Bangkok, for Asia’s leading LGBTQIA media publication Dear Straight People; Ark is currently testing his own limits with not one but two upcoming projects, both of which are highly anticipated. After wrapping the recently concluded horror thriller “Shadow”, Arj Saroj seems in high spirits whilst helming the adaptation “Allure of Siren The Series”. We sat down for a heart-to-heart with the talented director and it was truly stimulating!
